Can OpenCV 3 be compiled from source on this without hassle?

Could this be used as a desktop replacement?

I bought this with that intention but I've found the board to be unstable. I'd often find that it would reset itself without any clear idea why; I was pretty sure it wasn't overheating and nothing was running besides Unity desktop. Besides these issues there were some performance issues as well. I'm not sure if the updates have resolved my complaints, but I kept running into an issue of running out of memory was causing the device to crash. This is definitely a dev-only kit imho.

Can I run Steam on this?

The short answer is no. The long answer is... The linux Steam installer will run if you can replace the x86 library references however; even then you're no better off as the linux games on Steam are built for the x86 architecture. If you want to run Steam games, lobby Steam for Arm support. While you're at it, do the same for Minecraft as some mucking around with libraries is necessary there too.

Can you install SteamOS on it (by hacking the x86 architecture flag during the installation procedure)?

Simple answer is "no". SteamOS could be ported, but the 450+ games that are compiled for Linux on x86 wouldn't run. Check out Nvidia's Shield product for a streaming solution that might be of interest.
