On the Teacher: Saint Augustine & Saint Thomas Aquinas: a Comparison (Marquette Studies in Philosophy)
G**E
John P. Doyle
Doyle is the master craftsman of all philosophical history though at first sight he seems to be a specialist in just late Suarezian and post-Suarezian Scholasticism. He is a master of Heidegger's analysis of Scholasticism. He is a master of John Poinsot and John N. Deely. But his most subtle dialectic is with Plato (and Aristotle) on teaching as the movement of soul as in REPUBLIC VII 518c which Heidegger called in BASIC CONCEPTS OF ARISTOTELIAN PHILOSOPHY the prime example of movement per se. Here he edits Wade's thesis on Augustine's ON THE TEACHER written for his son Adeodatus. But one must remember Wittgenstein began the PHILOSOPHICAL INVESTIGATIONS with an educational (linguistic) quote from the CONFESSIONS so that Augustine's theory of education has become a focus point of modern philosophy.
