South Lake Tahoe Climbing

I agree with the other mediocre reviews both about the quality of the book and about the quality of the content. There were no color pictures in it, and the paper seems lower quality than what's in most of the other guide books I own. While this book was better than nothing, I felt like I'd wasted $25 on a guide that ended up being less useful than the Mountain Project app. Maybe it's just a noob crag seen as undeserving of much attention or individual route beta by the author, but the 90-foot wall only gets two pages - an overview and a topo drawing - at the very back of the book. The approach description indicated "100 feet west of the Vista area" which sent us completely the wrong direction, compared to Mountain Project's more detailed beta to go *past* the vista area and then find the wall about 150 feet to the side.

Good guide but is getting a bit outdated. I'd recommend to point you in the right direction. But, as an example, the map of Sugarloaf was really hard to follow and find the right walls. Found myself using mountain project and google maps to identify where I was (from my cell).

I picked up this guidebook because my girlfriend and I were taking a trip to Lake Tahoe and we wanted to get some climbing in. SuperTopo really put together a nice guide here. Very comprehensive and covers many climbing areas in South Lake Tahoe. It even has some bouldering in the Lover's Leap section. Speaking of Lover's Leap, the climbing there was fantastic. Corrugation Corner is really first-rate. The book did make it seem a bit more intimidating than it had to be, describing the second pitch as "horrendously exposed." In reality, the arête was quite well protected, and although exposed, not any more difficult than that 5.7 it is rated.

Really the best topos for South Tahoe climbs. I wish they had one for North Tahoe!

This is a terrible guide book. we spent two hours on our last trip trying to find the routes based off of the provided maps and descriptions. For an example, the route we were trying to find showed as a face climb on the front of the rock. The climb was actually on the backside of the rock in a cave. A small description "on backside" would have made all of the difference. Additionally, the approach descriptions are equally as bad. The guide stated the approach was a seven minute walk from the car when in reality is was a mile and a half and included a half mile of scrambling over a scree slide.If you are climbing in South Lake Tahoe, stop by the Strawberry Store and buy the guide book they offer there, which includes color maps and much better route beta.Climb Safely!

Hey - I don't know Chris or angry Pati but I just passed through the area with this book and a good time was had by all. And Pati - really - you shouldn't be so insecure around bitter locals. You'll not fare well in most climbing areas of the world - except Squamish. All Canadians are friendly. It must be the great food. And how does Pati know that all the good reviews are friends of the author's? Hmmm...I smell grudge.Remember - all guidebooks make 'locals' angry. I was through years ago and wished I'd had a book then and this one was a significant improvement over nothing. Good beta, good info.

I have lived and climbed in Tahoe for close to 20 years. This Supertaco guide to Tahoe was long over due. It includes many of the great NEW areas. Many of them with amazing moderate climbs including several fun bolted routes. The info in the this guide is much more accurate and up to date than any other I had owned. This is THE ONLY GUIDE YOU NEED FOR CLIMBING IN SLT.I also enjoyed the history and photos. This is the guide book in every Tahoe local's backpack. Great value. Get it!!!

Not as good as many of the other Supertopo guides but comprehensive on the area.
