## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can I "extend" my home WiFi signal with this, to basement, with same SSID, by plugging it into an Ethernet jack in basement that gets a full 25Mbs?**
A: YES, As long as the connection in the basement is routed properly and the WIRELESS SECURITY SETTINGS EXACTLY MATCHES the primary wireless signal EXCEPT FOR THE WIRELESS CHANNEL which must be DIFFERENT on this device than your primary wireless signal's CHANNEL. Regarding the wireless channel, you'll want to make sure that your primary router's wireless channel is FIXED (SET) to a channel (usually you'll want Channel 1, then 6, or 11 for your UBNT device so that both devices are on "non-overlapping" channels). You'll want to set this device's channel to a different channel (1, 6, or 11; whichever, channel of these you didn't set for the primary router). Step-by-Step:First, connect this device to a computer directly via ethernet cable and assign a static IP address to your computer's Ethernet card in the 192.168.1.X range such as 192.168.1.10 (but not 192.168.1.1 which will be your default gateway nor 192.168.1.20 which is the default IP address for the UBNT device); also set your subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 and your default gateway to 192.168.1.1 on your computer's network card (you'll want to reset these settings back to your previous settings after you're done configuring the UBNT device). At this point, I recommend downloading the latest firmware to be applied later, found at: http://www.ubnt.com/download#NanoStation:M2Next, simply login to the UBNT device via any web browser on your computer and goto: http://192.168.1.20username: ubnt password ubnt select your countyOn the first login I recommend that you apply the latest firmware downloaded earlier. Goto the system tab, select the firmware file. Upload. Wait for refresh. Reboot. Then do a reset to factory settings from the screen. Log back in and select country once more. Click the system tab to change username and password settings, if desired. Apply changes.Next you'll make the settings changes: (warning: don't "apply" changes until last step just "save"). Set your device's wireless mode to Access Point, match your wireless security settings exactly as your primary router's wireless signal (except for the channel: change this to a different number than your primary router's wireless signal), change channel width to 20MHz (so regular wifi devices can connect to the UBNT device). Save settings. On the network tab, make sure the UBNT device is set for bridge network mode (if you want primary router to handle the IP and DNS assignments via DCHP) or router network mode (if you need to separate the basement network from the main network), then save settings. Click the UBNT logo tab and UNCHECK the enable airmax setting (so that non-UBNT devices such as laptops and computers can connect to this device), then save. Then apply. Disconnect and reset your computer's network card settings. Connect the ethernet cable to the basement ethernet jack. Connect your computer via wifi to your UBNT device. Surf the web. Mission complete.P.S. If you don't need the extra gain, you can go with the loco version of this device, Ubiquiti Nanostation Loco M2http://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-LOCOM2-US-NanoStation-loco-M2/dp/B004EGI3CI/P.S.S. If you need more than 3 wireless access points on the same network use UBNT "unifi" devices instead.

**Q: Is the PoE included with the NanoStation M2?**
A: Larry - yes, POE adapter is included with this antenna.

**Q: Can I use it to connect to a public wifi to which I have no physical access to then re-broadcast to my usb wifi adapter?**
A: You can connect to an access point in router mode. Your ethernet cable then carries the connection, which you would then have to plugin to another wireless router back inside your home. It does not have a repeater mode. Usually these types of arrangements have some latency and possible channel interference so you will want your rebroadcasting device to use a different channel. There are dedicated repeaters on the market; and dd-wrt flashing can convert some old routers into a working repeater.

**Q: I'd like to set it up to receive a wifi signal and repeat it. Will it do that?**
A: Nanostation M2 is most commonly used as PTP (point to point) line of sight radios. A lot of people are under the misconception that this somehow shoots a blanket of Wi-Fi over the entire area, but that is not how these radios work. By using the UB-AM (antenna mount) and NANOMOUNT or NS-WM (wall mount) you should try to align the radios so they have line of sight to each other to achieve maximum distance. If there are trees or buildings in the way and line of sight is not possible, the Nanostation M900's 900MHz signal can pass through objects.
You will need 2 radios to use PTP. The M2 series operates on 2.4GHz spectrum, the M5s operate on 5GHz spectrum, and the M900 works on 900MHz. The 5GHz network cannot be seen by a client device (laptop, desktop, phone, etc). You will not see the SSID being broadcast from the 5GHz because these radios are designed to talk to each other, not a client device. 5GHz has the greatest distance, but cannot pass through objects; the 2.4GHz can go through small objects; and the 900MHz can go through a building. The distances are as follows:
NSM2: 13+ KM (8.07 Miles)
It's important to note that a LocoM2 cannot talk to an M5 because of the different frequency, although a Nanostation M2 is compatible with a LocoM2.
