I put in a new cement driveway and steps last year and could not use corrosive products to melt ice. I purchased a 40 lb bag of this stuff instead to keep the walk safe as the handrails were not installed before winter. It's a natural, benign product, that provides a nice grit to walk on. It doesn't melt ice, but it does provide a safe surface. It's dark colored and will help melt ice when the sun is out, but it's primary function is to provide grit. It's a natural product and it doesn't dissolve, so it's safe for the environment and goes a long, long way. You only need to apply a few times a year. I live a a cold climate and used less that 1/5 of the bag the entire winter.
