Hard Getting Used To the Changes from the Original RollerCoaster Tycoon -- and Definitely Not As Good as the Original RCT!!!!!!!

*by C***E on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 20, 2017*

I got

RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Platinum

     because I'd gotten the original

Roller Coaster Tycoon

game as well as the expansion packs,

Corkscrew Follies

     and

Loopy Landscapes

from Best Buy, or Circuit City (or other brick & mortar stores), in the late-90s/early-00's -- and I'd really liked, if not even LOVED it!

Roller Coaster Tycoon

and its expansion packs, were a very fun & challenging game, that never got boring and remained enjoyable for years. So much so, that when the next version/sequel (

RollerCoaster Tycoon 2

    ) and its expansion packs,

Time Twister

     and

Wacky Worlds

came out, I wanted to get it right away to add to the fun & more challenges. Yet, I did not, and actually, years later, I still have not (yet!). But that's NOT because I don't want it, or think I'd like it. Rather, because I'd been having a lot of problems with Windows PCs, I wanted to switch to Apple/Mac computers -- and I wanted to wait before getting any new software that might not (or would not!) be compatible with my next laptop, which I hoped would be a Macintosh. However, it wasn't. Instead, I got an HP laptop from my family for Christmas, which was bought on a "doorbuster" Black Friday sale and basically conked out in less than 2 years. In fact, it took a number of years (actually more than half a decade) from the time I started HATING Windows PC computers and wanting to switch to Mac -- until I finally got a MacBook Pro laptop from my family for Christmas 2013. Soon afterwards (just about a month later), I ordered this game

RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Platinum

. Even though what I looked for, and REALLY WANTED to get, was the original RollerCoaster Tycoon (including its expansion packs) and RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 (and its expansion packs), unfortunately, there did not seem to be a Mac version for those games, so I got this one instead. However, I have to say that, for as much as I ♡ the original

     (including the expansion packs

Corkscrew Follies

), I am just as disappointed (so far!) with this sequel,

RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Platinum

. I was really hoping that the latest version would at least be just as good, if not EVEN BETTER than the original from the late 90s, over a decade and a half ago. Unfortunately that does NOT seem to be the case. In fact, to the contrary, I think this version is, in some ways, WORSE than the original version I got in 1999 or 2000 -- and there seems to be several changes from the original version, that are NOT for the better. For example, to the best of my recollections (granted, its been several years since I've played the original RCT -- since, in general, I HATE Windows computers) in the original version of RollerCoaster Tycoon, the game had the ability to rotate the screen view to/from different angles to get the best view based on what the player was trying to do. Like if they are building a rollercoaster whose entrance was facing the entrance of the amusement park, the player could turn the screen view around, so that, rather than the angle of their view being from BEHIND the park entrance, they could rotate it 180º (or whatever) so that the angle of their view would be from the FRONT of the park entrance, and therefore they can see the ride entrance for the rollercoaster they are constructing. However, in this version of the game, the ability to rotate the game-screen does NOT seem to be available -- at least not in the "Sandbox Mode", which given the changes from the original RCT, is the only mode I've used so far. If that's not bad enough, also, UNLIKE the original RollerCoaster Tycoon, which, if I remember correctly, had at least a few game scenarios already pre-loaded or at the very least, did not need the player to create a scenario" in order to play -- the way that this version does in order for the player to play using the competitive "Career Mode" function. That is another negative change from the original version -- and though there's probably been other changes from the original RollerCoaster Tycoon, whether they're good or bad changes, still remains to be seen. Because, the lack of a rotate screen feature is so frustrating, that, pretty much every single time I've played (or tried to play) this game, I've ended up quitting shortly after (like within a few minutes or so) starting it. So I'm not really sure what other changes there are from the original. But, for me, the removal of the ability to rotate the screen-view to view the park & its rides from all different angles in order to see exactly what I'm doing (like where I'm building a ride's entrance or exit, or putting up a queue path, or walkway) is the biggest and most annoying of all the possible/likely changes. It is VERY disappointing, especially since I ♡ my

MacBook Pro Laptop

and I ♡ RollerCoaster Tycoon -- and unfortunately this is the only version of the game that seems to be compatible with Mac computers!Yet, for better or worse, thankfully (as much as I ABSOLUTELY HATE Windows PC computers otherwise) I still have the couple old Windows desktop PCs from the late 90s and early 00s, as well as at least 1 PC laptop (like my last Windows computer -- an HP laptop that's not currently working/barely even turns on & loads up) lying around somewhere, that, for various reasons, I never got around to getting rid of. While these desktop PCs have not been used or turned on, or even just hooked up for years, and may or may not be functional -- they are also basically OFFLINE computers. Because they were purchased in the days before Wi-Fi, DSL & other technological advances were common, when most people (maybe with the exception of big businesses, libraries, colleges/universities, and schools) connected to the Internet using regular analog phone lines and dial-up ISPs, as far as I know, not only are they not Wi-Fi ready, but I'm not sure if they even have an Ethernet port either. Not to mention that even if they DID/DO have an Ethernet port, nevertheless, because the modem/router is on a different floor than where the desktop computer will be located (the modem/router is in on the main floor, in the family room -- and the computer will be in a spare/guest bedroom on the 2nd floor) it would still be difficult, if not impossible to connect it to the Internet via wired Ethernet. So the only options are either to get a USB Wi-Fi dongle or wireless card which I don't want to bother with, for such old computers -- OR to get dial-up Internet, which of course, is also a pointless waste of money just to connect 15-20 year old Windows 98 and XP computers to the Internet. Especially when I already have an AWESOME

MacBook Pro

laptop and other devices, like my tablet & smartphone already connected to Wi-Fi Internet via my home network. Thus, for all intents & purposes these desktop PCs are -- and from this point on, will probably always be, OFFLINE computers............which make them perfect to run expired Windows OS, like Windows 98 & Windows XP (and use/play game software like

Roller Coaster Tycoon

    ,

Babyz: Your Virtual Bundle of Joy

     and

Petz: Dogz & Catz

which is either NOT available/compatible with Mac computers [as with the Babyz and Petz games] OR even if available, is not really a good version [like with RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Platinum] of the game) since it won't matter that there's no further security updates, because they're never (or no longer) going to be connecting to the Internet anyway! That is why, after having played the original

Roller Coaster Tycoon

& its expansion packs with enjoyment for several years, and being SORELY DISAPPOINTED by

RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Platinum

I'm planning to go back to the original. In fact, as soon as I can clean out the room that these desktop PCs are in (because its been used as a storage room for the past several years), I'm going to reconnect the old Windows 98 and Windows XP desktop PCs -- and maybe, if possible, consolidate both operating systems (like with a hard drive partition) on the newer of the two computers and then get rid of the older desktop and re-install

Roller Coaster Tycoon

and other software I enjoyed on Windows 98. In addition, I'm planning to buy the next version/sequel (

RollerCoaster Tycoon 2

    ) and its expansion packs,

Time Twister

     and

Wacky Worlds

in the hope that they are as good (or better than) the original -- and have the best of both versions, where

RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Platinum

totally failed!Although there are *some* good things about this version (such as some of the new ride options and coaster designs that weren't available [or at least that I didn't see] in the original), I do NOT get why the creators had to change basic features, like removing the necessary screen-rotate function -- and that was one of the reasons why I was seriously considering giving this item 2 stars. But ultimately, I gave it 3 stars, because my opinion of it may be biased because of the differences between this version of RollerCoaster Tycoon, and the original -- and those who've never played the original RCT from the late 90s or early 00s, *might* not have the same experiences with this version as I've had.Still, in my honest opinion, all in all, this game was a pretty big disappointment!!★☆★ 3 STARS!!!

Great game. now on the Mac

*by J***. on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on October 12, 2011*

I love RCT 3 and played it and the add ons all the way through on Windows a couple of years back. Then I made the switch and kind of gave up on gaming. When I saw this, I had to get it and it was just like I remembered. I'm playing it on a two year old MacBook Pro and it seems to run just fine. I didn't change any of the out-of-the box settings and it just worked for me.Only two things bother me about the game:One, the game itself is a time sink. You start to build a park meaning to spend only a short while and end up fiddling with it for hours and hours. Where does that time go? Maybe it's not so bad because I'm having fun the whole time. You definitely get your dollars-to-entertainment value from this game. And two, you have to have the disk to play. All of the files are copied onto your hard drive but it still checks if the DVD is inserted before it will play. The DVD player on my Mac is loud when it spins and actually vibrates my machine. It seems such a waste of energy to be spinning that disk the whole time I am playing. I havent tried to start it and then eject the disk, but maybe that is a solution. I don't know how someone with a MacBook Air could play the game with the physical disk requirement. It would seem a shame to have such a sleek gaming notebook and have to carry around an external disk all the time. Both of the criticisms above take nothing away from the gameplay though and for that reason, I still need to give it five stars.

    Great Game!

*by B***S on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 23, 2012*

I had Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 Gold Edition for my Windows desktop but put it in a yard sale because I wanted the money more than anything. This game is awesome! The expansion packs make it even better. That is the reason I bought this game for Mac. I now have a MacBook Pro for college and I have to say I was surprised how well this game worked. It is a little buggy at times...even after turning my visual settings more towards the performance notch and reducing the screen resolution. Sometimes there is a little delay and the game freezes for a few seconds but it's nothing that I can't live with. It was worth the price of the Mac version just to see it run on a MacBook.I have Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 with a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 Processor and this game runs pretty smoothly on it. I'm now ordering the PC version of Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 Platinum so I don't have to deal with so much lag when I am at home. Thanks to the Mac version, I now have this gem on the go as well. You will have fun with this one but I would suggest buying this game for a PC for the cleanest gaming experience :)
