Yes the trimmer holds a 12x12 paper but if you want to cut the width to 8”, you can’t because the board ends at 9”.How you measure 4”? By guessing?

Some people mark the measurements they use most often on the base themselves so they clearly have the right reference guide. Also as the other answer mention it's easy to cut any size smaller just by measuring from the other side that's going to be cut off. I do this a lot with metal dies as a guide to get a close size I need to run through a die cutting machine. It saves paper and time getting scissors out. Other times scissors are much quicker and saves more paper. Learning to be flexible and thinking outside the box really helps. I keep a quality and I do mean quality ruler handy also when using any of my 3 paper cutters. That has become my #1 assurance I'm going to get it right. My Carl210 is magnetic base. The guide as lovely as it is can move too easily. So I have these SUPER strong knob magnets that once I get a precise setting for the Carl magnetic bar guide I put the knob magnets behind it so it can not move on me. This allows me to make numerous cuts for larger projects. For example I just made three 26 double sided laminated page books. And a few years ago over sixty 50 plus page books with photos for a class reunion address book and more. So I also make templates that I use often as guides too. And so I am always thinking outside the box but also ahead for other projects I know what I'm doing with one today will apply later on. You might find it helpful to put a clear adhesive ruler dow on the far end of the base to help you too. I wouldn't because I hate self adhesives that fail sometimes and makes a bigger mess. But sounds like you might find it helpful.

While I am not familiar with the type of paper you want to cut, there are several cutting blades that you can purchase which might do the job for you.
This paper cutter works very well for my paper cutting requirement.
