Racial and Cultural Dynamics in Group and Organizational Life: Crossing Boundaries

I am sure the authors are experts in their respective fields, but in maintaining an objective position, they definitely fall short.The most important (to me) part of the book is a table that speaks to the various impacts of having a white/person of color/latino/asian leader mixed with a group of the same demographics...pretty good concept and has some interesting aspects, but instead of providing any citation to the data (research, scholarly study, article, etc) we are told "...This table was developed from conversations with colleagues, the literature, and personal and professional experiences of the author" (p. 108).I doubt we would allow undergraduate students to justify their work with such shaky citations, but authors of graduate-level texts are allowed to make some heavy value-judgements on the basis of subjective anecdotal evidence?President Obama is profiled extensively in the leadership chapter, and each time he is profiled, he is listed as either the demonstration of what is correct in cross-cultural leadership, and those that had concerns during the 2008 election with Rev Jeremiah Wright's sermons demonstrated a racial-cultural bias.This book is helpful in spurring thought, but is not much of a resource to utilize to lead cross-cultural groups.

Excellent book that speaks to group dynamics with awareness.

I had to get this for school and I rarely used it. I'm all about learning about this topic in my field of work, but there wasn't much that I retained from this book.

Thin and portable; Well-written yet accessible; great reference tool and way to keep the worker engaged in self-reflection on the interplays of social location, demographic, and the group dynamic.

I recommend this thoughtful book for anyone interested in understanding racial and cross-cultural dynamics from an open systems, psychodynamically informed, perspective. It is an approach that reveals extremely important features of these topics and the authors have done an excellent job of explicating these ideas in a way that is accessible yet not simplistic. An excellent book.

This book is a gem for anyone studying group dynamics. It interweaves psychoanalytic concepts and systemic theory to create a rich description of group processes, and how cultural and racial dynamics affect groups. This book is a wonderful resource for group therapists, or organizational psychology students.

This is a brilliant book. Well articulated and evidenced. It's a must read on racial and cultural dynamics.
