Remote : Fried, Jason, Heinemeier Hansson, David: desertcart.in: Books Review: Fantastic book - If you're interested in remote working you should not miss this one. After reading you will believe that remote working is not so difficult as it's made out to be. This book concentrates on all the relavant stuff including the main tools required for remote working, importance of communication and the importance of trusting the employee to get work done remotely. A short book, but with so much of value, packed in it. Review: A comprehensive collection of guidelines for working remotely, but somewhat underwhelming - This book is a comprehensive collection of guidelines for working remotely. It covers all aspects: the advantages of remote working, the disadvantages of working in an office, common objects to remote and how to address them, what to do and not to do when working remotely, how to hire people who are a good fit for working remotely, and so on. The book is a comprehensive collection of techniques for working remotely. I feel it was worth my time to read it, since working remotely is a reality today. I came close to starting a startup with a remote cofounder, in fact, in addition to working remotely for many years before that, so I think knowing how to work well remotely is an essential skill in today's world. The book is written in a very clear, crisp and concise manner, as is typical of 37 signals's great book Rework. So it's quick to finish. The book does seem a little one-sided in its arguments. It tries to pass remote off as having tons of advantages and few disadvantages. That's a little hard to believe. A more balanced approach would have worked better. For example, this books talks of the disadvantages of working in an office. Fine. So how would you design an office, and the culture, so that you have the benefit of face to face interactions when needed but not interruptions all day? Maybe equip everyone with private offices with doors that close, so that people can close them when they want to concentrate, and open them when they are available to chat? The book does seem a little facile, but still worth reading, which is why I awarded it four stars.

A comprehensive collection of guidelines for working remotely, but somewhat underwhelming

Fantastic read
Good book - being a remote organization, we face a lot of challenges that the author in this book brings up and also addresses - right from perception issues to practical things like culture building. Worth a read for anyone who wants to start enjoying the benefits of remote working (hint: reduced or no commute, flexible work timings, happier employees, and so on).

Ok to read
This book is good for the companies who are not into web or internet world...but irony is remote work could be possible for internet savvy companies only.

Getting started guide for enabling remote work
Overall the book gives a feel of its very easy to build and manage a remote team. We get to know the common hurdles and solutions to handle them. Having said that all the solutions are based on assumption that you have responsible people at all positions. There is shortage of that kind of people and the solutions suggested in the book won't work.

Exactly what I needed.
I have been planning to convert my current local office to a distributed workspace. This book has been really helpful as it gave me a clear idea of the Do's and Dont's while I begin the process. If you do not want to learn few important things the hard way then please read this book.

Excellent book
A must read for everyone working in the knowledge industry, particularly people forced into remote work by COVID 19. I have been a big fan of Basecamp, the perfect tool for a remote work dominated world.

A topic I personally experienced
Book kept me engaging as I was retrospecting my experiences. It's a good narration with practical experience uncovered with guidelines or best practices. Worth the time for beginners willing to be enterpreneurs/software consultants. A decades experience can be digested in no time.

I've worked remotely in the past, and in-house more recently, as an employee and manager, so I certainly didn't need convincing that remote work offers a lot of positives for employees and businesses willing to let go of some traditional staples. What I enjoyed most about Remote was how inspired I felt while reading it, I kept thinking "Yes, they GET it." It's not an in-depth instruction manual, nor an overly analytic case study. Rather, I found it a relatively and refreshingly easy read with some solid examples covering key areas of consideration. I went away feeling hopeful, not just about the state of remote working, because as the authors mention, it's not a new fad and it's not going away. No, I went away feeling hopeful about how 37signals talk about their team and talent, how they view the business value of employees being able to live how and where they want, while still contributing to a driven team. Want to travel? No problem, grab your laptop and go. Want to work in the office, sure thing. Afternoons with your children, easy. You don't/shouldn't have to give up what you love in life just to make a living. It's an ethos I really believe in, and I think this book serves as a great positive introduction.

I am a big fan of Jason’s work philosophy in general. In this book he explain what remote work is (it is not necessarily WFH neither offshores). He builds a good argument on why it can be a good thing for your company and specially how you can be a good remote worker. Although it is claimed from a tech/office work perspective, one can draw a good connection for other jobs.

37 Signals is an amazing company that offers a really fresh perspective on business. They really understand the importance of hiring top notch talent and striving to strike the work/life balance that keeps a team most creative and productive. Both their books Rework and Remote --- are worth checking out. They're hardcore, progressive and cut right through the old-school BS that can hold a company back.
