Does this have to connect to a network, or can it just be connected directly to the telephone line?

5400 series phones are digital phones and requires a digital port on an Avaya phone system and get their power directly from the phone system. The 5600 series are IP Phones and need a POE network port or POE injector. The 5600 phone does need to plug directly into a phone system but it does not need to connect to an Avaya phone system by a static route or properly configured VLAN.
