What is the point of buying these versus buying a whole new original risk set? quality? quantity?

If you are playing a full game--not using the "cease fire" card--you may need additional men to keep the game going...at least we do. This is why some people buy the extra pieces: wanting to play a full game, don't like the colors from the original pieces provided, missing pieces, need replacements, or original pieces were too similar in color such as the blue and gray or the blue and green--some game pieces were not easy to tell apart.
