The Code. the Evaluation. the Protocols: Striving to Become an Eminently Qualified Human

Redemption
For months now I have been living in fear. Fear that one night I would wake up from an unheard sound in a cold sweat. My eyes darting across the room. Scanning. There he is, crouched in the corner of my apartment, Jocko watches me with cool calculation. The mighty muscled frogman, with fresh war paint on his face, rises and saunters to my bed. His intense, unblinking eyes, staring down at me.I remember my review of Disciple Equals Freedom Field Manual. Three out of five stars. A mediocre review for his book. I want to speak to him, to apologize, to tell him that I didn’t think my review would be so popular, or that so many people would see it, but the fear stifles my words in my throat. Finally, he speaks a single word, before launching out my window into the night.“Good.”This book crushes my criticisms and, while short, is excellent. It is a straightforward distillation of what it means to be “On The Path” and how to become who we are called to be. The Code remind us all, no matter who or where we are what we should strive to be. The Evaluation is a painful, but useful tool. The Protocol section is a great reference tool for dealing with life’s challenges that I know I will find myself returning to.Overall, a useful tool to supplement Jocko’s other books and podcasts, and a powerful tool when combined with DEF Field Manual.*This review was for the Kindle version.

To being on the Path
Once again, Jocko provides clarity on how manage yourself to be the best you can be. He provides clear benchmarks and tools for you to use to keep you on the path. Additionally, he provides contingency plans when the unexpected strikes you. His primary message is discipline equals freedom. These are protocols to help you stay on the path.

Great concise read
Great content, very concise, and easy to read. A lot of the content relates to things you’ve probably heard before, but the layout, presentation and tone of it really hit home. Good things!

Feels like a powerpoint
Is it motivating, YES! Simple to read? YES! I thought it’d be more of a book with intro, supporting points, multi paragraphs, etc. But it feels more of a PowerPoint meaning pages didn’t have many words and they felt more like slides to peruse through. I do love that I could read this in 15 mins and thus quickly Re-read for motivation any time

Solid Book
This book serves as a great intro and description of how to become an Eminently Qualified Human. It pairs well with the App EQH that Jocko has created by giving descriptions of all the moving parts and what each thing means. It clearly defines success and pushes the reader that, in order to be the best version of themselves, you start today and keep moving forward.

A tool and framework for thinking about your progress
Overall, this stimulates interesting thinking about how you are approaching your life, and borrowing from military year end evaluation systems (also often found in the corporate world), asks you to rate yourself as the CEO of your life in key areas. The handbook, in conjunction with the podcast episodes, helps provide a solid framework for how to approach the various areas in one’s life that need focus and attention, and more importantly, how to measure those efforts. For those who are honest with themselves, going through the evaluation on a frequent basis is a good reminder of where we fall short or where we need to focus additional attention. That being said, some of the advice in the “protocols” section is general, perhaps by necessity, and I think some additional context to help differentiate the middle levels of the ratings would have been more helpful.
