The original has the appeal of an economics professor (if I recall correctly) talking matter-of-factly to a bunch of unprepared students who need a math refresher before they can understand his core course topics. Disclaimer: I followed this book to write my lectures and assignments, and for that purpose it was marvelous. Works well for assigned reading, too. But, I could not say for certain how well it would work for pure self-study -- it would depend somewhat on your affinity with reading. It is an excellent source if you are returning to math after being out of school. It takes you back to basics to bring fast results solving problems and prepares you within a reasonable amount of time. You won't need to memorize a bunch of formulas or use a calculator. Each chapter explains in detail to help you understand. There are numerous self and review tests at the end of the book. The teaching material is not complicated. Simple and straight to the point to help you understand everyday math. If you lost your touch with math this book will revive you with numbers to help you master them with no fear. Buy this book if you need help with understanding math. Just One Thing Missing. *by G***N on July 11, 2021* Pretty much as advertised this book does cover almost all the most important math you need for everyday use. A one star hit for what I think is the only thing missing TVM: PMT, present and future value calculations are essential knowledge to understand everything from mortgage and car payments to retirement and financial planning skills. Even if the author took a high level approach and pointed the reader to online resources I’d be happy.
