Complete Spanish Step-by-Step, Premium Second Edition

I found this book to be extremely helpful. I have studied Spanish off and on for a number of years. This book is very clear in explanations and examples and has end of section exercises as well as reading comprehension sections. The book is well laid out and easy to read. The book is very helpful for a person studying Spanish through an online app, as it explains verb conjugation, tenses, idioms and more.

I have literally learned more in one week with this book than months with Duolingo and Memrise!! Very well put together - clear, straightforward approach. Teaches basic rules and tips on how to approach and remember grammar, removes unnecessary confusion. Includes helpful flash cards and quizzes on the McGraw Hill app - just scan the QR code in the back of book to access. (The McGraw Hill app is a little dated but serves the purpose.) If you really want to see progress that sticks, add this book to your tool kit. You will wish you had ordered sooner! *Retired healthcare professor 🤓

I would highly recommend purchasing Complete Spanish Step-by-Step, Premium Second Edition by Barbara Bregstein. After 6 months of Spanish learning on my own by using other books and with a Spanish tutor, this book has provided me with more knowledge that I can use and I’m only on the fifth chapter. I want to address some comments. 1- There is an app from McGraw Hill publisher that allows you to practice the vocabulary with flashcards and to take an assessment. Someone stated it only works with older model phones, which isn’t true. It works with my iPhone 16. 2- There is also an answer key in the back of the book for the exercises. 3- There is an audiobook available, however you must pay for it. I have Spotify and it is included in my premium subscription, so I use it to reinforce what I learned. I find it very helpful. 4- There is vocabulary throughout the entire book that is repeated in later chapters to increase your Spanish vocabulary and help you to remember. 5- Lastly, there are passages that reinforce the vocabulary that you learned. Pairing it with the audio gives you the comprehensible input needed to learn the language. Great book. Highly recommend!

I finished a computer spanish course, Fluenz. It was a good course, but is hard for me to judge. if I had not taken several quarters of Spanish Conversaion years ago the conjugation of verbs might have been harder for me. It did not cover everything I was seeking out books to fill in what I missed and this book was found. It is not perfect, but I can skip around and find what is needed like how to conjugate verbs to command. This book and Duolingo.com are filling in many of the things a single computer course cannot teach unless it it very long. I am now starting to read this book from the beginning to end. It is slow going since a lot of new words are in each chapter but with Duolingo and a review of Fluenz progress is being made. I was thinking of getting a Spanish speaking misstress, but for some reason I don't think my wife would approve. I've tried many books but this book, with duolingo, 501 Spanish Verbs, a good Spanish dictionary, and a course like Fluenz, Spanish fluency seems to be obtainable without years in some college. Buy it, you will not be disappointed it you really use it. It has quizzes with answers at the end of the book. I forgot the most important item also get on line to Spanish Dictionary.com. You can test your sentences and write in english for a spanish translation.

I took Spanish in high school, so I got this book as a refresher, not as a first time learner. For me, it’s very well organized, and so far very helpful, laid out very much like a textbook.

So helpful!! Absolutely love the pace of this study! Extremely helpful with my self study, learning and immediately using in practice. The grammar rules are simplified and very clear. I did have a bit of vocabulary knowledge starting out, however they seem to introduce new vocab as needed so you should be okay coming in studying as you go without much prior understanding.

Actually retained some of my brief grade-school exposure to Spanish language and helping my high-school-aged kids through their flashcard learning, many years ago. Currently refreshing through an in-person class with a native speaker who is a professional interpreter. Her recommendation of Duolingo to support our class sessions has been so appreciated. As a bibliophile, I quickly realized my personal need for additional, supporting written resources. Appreciated reviews of this text by Amazon purchasers and can affirm with my findings: Defines relevant grammatical basics and correlates English to Spanish usage. Succinct, yet builds my comprehension through the engaging and progressive presentation of the material. Exercises are thoughtfully developed and comprehensive. Answers are included in the back of the book. Encourages pronunciation technique resources for robust conversational usage. In association with publishers McGrawHill and the provided (or outside apps) adjunct electronic resources, Ms. Bregstein’s text is THE BEST user-friendly text in my opinion!

Love it! Simple to start, plenty of written exercises to work on. Tackles sentence structures, basic vocab and grammar, pronouns. Very comprehensive and user friendly. I’d recommend having a spanish-English dictionary handy when you study to help translate and understand the chapters as well.

I've been using this book for a week and already find the layout and structure superior to others I've used. After trying many other self-teaching books/methods I've always found that the bulk of learning focuses around language useful to a short stay tourist, rather than learning the core of the language in order to become familiar with any scenario. Bregsteins book however, builds solid foundations and allows the user to become confident in structure of the sentence. I've used this book to effectively start from scratch and although it begins with a simple alphabet, I found the explanation of phonetic sounds and basic rules more digestible than other books. As a novice, I wish I had started with this book; its clear, structured and the exercises throughout help to solidify what has been learned. For optimum learning, do as advised and dont skip ahead. Good luck in your studies.

Best book to learn Spanish for beginners - the explanations are clear, new vocabulary is introduced at an optimal pace, and there are also exercises if you're into that sort of learning.
