Rugged, long battery lasting light source - very happy with this purchase
Summary: I'm a big fan of this lantern and very glad I made this purchase. 5 stars for the quality of its light (warm/white), its ruggedness and its stated ability to last 70 hours on one set of batteries. Details: I was in the market for emergency light sources so a few weeks back I ordered 3 different types of camping / emergency lanterns. When I saw this Coleman at the price of $17.79 I thought it could be an amazing bargain. My experience with the Coleman brand name has been very good over the years. However, I was a bit put off by the description of it as being rated at 400 lumens as other lanterns were rating themselves much higher. But based on the Coleman brandname, the fact that this was powered by 4 D batteries and rated to last up to 70 hours on the low setting, I decided to purchase it. I am glad I did. First things first. The batteries (not included) were easy to put in but you do have to pay attention to the orientation of the batteries as indicated under the unit. After the batteries were put in, it worked uneventfully at both the low and high settings. It puts out a nice warm/white light that I find very non-harsh and comforting. It is a little less bright than another lantern I ordered at the same time but not subjectively meaningfully so. I like the quality of the light a lot. If this quality of light can actually last 70 hours as stated (and I have no reason to doubt it at this point), I will be very impressed. This light seems well built and rugged. Of all the lights I have purchased, for sure, this is the one that I would take out in a driving rain or snowstorm. I feel in an outage situation, I might first start with one of the other lanterns I bought, but I would use them to find where I stored this one and then use this one as my go-to lighting for the remainder of the outage feeling comfortable the 4 D batteries would drive the light source for a long duration. So pros: works as expected, fairly easy to put in the batteries but pay attention to orientation, appears rugged and well-built and gives off a very nice color and non-harsh light. Cons: A little less bright than other lights I just bought. Also 4 D batteries makes this heavy in comparison to other lanterns so may not be the best choice to take with you on a short camping trip if you are carrying your light source in a backpack. So 5 stars from me for this product. I recommend anyone reading this click on my profile to read my review of the 2 other types of lanterns I purchased at the same time. They each have their advantages and disadvantages when being compared to one another. I am nonetheless very happy with this Coleman lamp and would not hesitate to purchase it again. At $17.79 I consider it quite the bargain.

So Glad I Bought!!!
Great lantern! Love the look and light weight of it. The brightness levels are perfect and it was so simple to just insert the 4 D batteries and twist back on the bottom portion. Thrilled, great product! Amazon shipped immediately which was amazing because frigid weather hits tomorrow and nervous needing to last minute prep for highly probable electrical power loss. I sincerely appreciated Amazon’s fast shipping!!!

Great lantern.
This is like nostalgia from the older Coleman lanterns, except in plastic form. It's rather hefty and durable too. The 400L is plenty bright and actually shocked us how well it lit up the camp area. We like the idea of carrying around a few batteries over any type of fuel. We have had no problems with battery compartment. Fun and useful.

Vast improvement over CPX-6 version of this lantern
I have 3 of the CPX-6 version of this lantern, two of which have broken battery packs. I have two helpful suggestions for this lantern concerning the installation of the batteries. Firstly, when you install the batteries make sure they float freely and compress the contact in the base (give them a push and make sure they to into the base and pop back up). Secondly, sit down and hold the lantern upside down in your lap with one hand and screw on the base cover with the other. As to the effectiveness of the lantern, it's really quite good during a power outage. The brightness is more than adequate, and you don't have to worry about it rolling off the table. I can't vouch for the water resistance, and as far as the impact resistance is concerned, I don't think I'd want to subject to too much physical abuse (reason for 4 stars instead of 5).

Flickers a bit, but nice and bright
I purchased this to replace my older Coleman lantern that I destroyed trying to remove the batteries. (Plastic snapped.) This will sound odd, but I use the lantern to light my work space when I'm on camera for meetings. It generally works great (and I acknowledge it's not meant for meeting cinematography), but it flickers...the light is not consistent. Now that said, it has 2 light levels and would be perfect for the intended purpose...camping. It's bright. It's also light weight. AND the battery cover, on what seems to be a new design, is easy to remove and replace!!

Bright and Brighter
Very nice battery lantern. Everyone wants rechargeable, but there is something to be said for battery operated emergency lanterns when you can't find a way to recharge the other ones. Just keep plenty of spare batteries on hand. One very nice feature is that the top metal handle is actually similar to a carabiner in that you can open it, hook it on something and snap it closed. That is a nice feature. I did have problems getting the batteries in and the base to screw close. When I checked, one of the bays would not allow the battery to seat which would not allow the bottom to screw on. There was a piece of plastic stuck under the metal contact, once that was removed the battery dropped in and all was well. Now, for brightness, on low it is bright, nice regular use level, but on hi, nicely brighter. I would highly recommend this light to anyone.

Works great. I replaced my old version that was 20 years old. The new one is smaller and brighter.
