Very good book
I used this book for my intro to computer science class @ The University of Rhode Island and it is a very good book to learn from. I would recommend using this book to anyone trying to lean Python

I didn't want to write a game, but otherwise acceptable
Wish it had focused on file operations, web site operations, or networking, but it is focused on gaming. That's ok, just not what I needed.

Ideal for intermediate game programmers
This book contains a large set of useful skills to create your very own video games in Python. It uses the pygame game library throughout and is a progressive study book (meaning the exercises get more difficult as you read on...).The upside of the book is that it manages to cover a lot of different gaming material in such a small book (This one is about 1/3rd smaller than the previous volume), I wouldn't treat this as a continuation of the previous book because this focuses ENTIRELY on gaming. No networking/internet protocols or any mention of string formatting etc...That said there are some useful things spoken about, not much is 'taught' in the book, it assumes prior knowledge for the majority of the time. The teaching style is a big downer however, the author doesn't go out of his way to cover how things work to their full effect, if you are someone that grasps concepts quickly, then this is not a problem for you. But, it left me skimming the internet to learn more about what the auhor intended to teach.Topics covered (in no particular order)Random room generationRandom terrain generationTrigonometryMouse and keyboard eventsCreating and editing spritesSmall coverage of 'for' loops and arraysI consider these to be the most interesting parts of the book, and also the most useful.Like I said, not for (complete) beginners and anyone not interested in gaming.

What it says on the tin
Not for the absolute beginner (clue in the book title), and carries on reasonably well from the similar book "Python Programming for the Absolute Beginner". There is some repetition (chapter on lists and tuples for instance), though the aspiring programmer may well be pleased to have the topics reinforced. The explanation of Object-Oriented-Programming, and the "class" based nature of Python is introduced very quickly, with a limited example of it (and inheritance). Greater detail, and more examples of this would make Python easier for relatives noobs like myself. On the whole though, heartily recommended IF you have the basics of Python, OR as in addition to a book/resource aimed at complete beginners (such as the one above, of which I have an the 1st edition).FYI - this book only covers Python 3.2, so if you've learnt Python 2.x, like I had, prepare to alter your code a bit.

Great intro to games programming
Love the example programs showing how games can be constructed. Great excercises suggested to help build on your knowledge and consolidate the theory into practice - which, if carried out, produce robust and playable games on completion.Next step is a compiled language - to help speed up some of the more intense graphics!
