why is bidirectional important?

Bidirectional is important if you use your cable for internet service or your cable box provides interactive services.

Will this work with a cell signal booster?

Yes, my is attach to a booster antenna

Why does the 3-way splitter cost more than the 4-way splitter?

It probably has to do with the type of splitter. The 4-way may not be bi-directional and/or does not handle the same frequency range as the 3-way that I had purchased.
