Am i required to know the old passwords for the computers the hard drive came from? what happens if i can’t recall  the old pws?

This device has nothing to do with password protection. All it does is allow the user to copy files from one older, uninstalled HDD or SSD to second unit, or a computer without having to go through the additional step of copying files to CD-Rom or thumb drive formats. Once this device is connected to the old drive, and then connected to your computer, the computer looks at this old drive as one of its own. You can copy any files to the HDD or SSD in your computer directly Unless the files you want to transfer to the computer are encrypted, you should have no problem, since the password on the old drive is only for the Windows operating system to seek and unlock the computer for authorized users The password for the computer does not encrypt any the files on the computer. However, if the files ARE encrypted you will need to know the password for the encryption system used to open those files, and then, if you wish, you can re-encrypt them once the files have been transferred to the new computer. That's why is so important to write down your various passwords and keep a list of them in a known, secure place, in case your computer dies, you'll know what they were.

The power cord that plugs into a 3.5 ide drive looks too short to reach the location of a drive plugged into the unit. Am i correct?

I didn't have any problem plugging in the power cord to any of the 3.5" drives I used with the device. The length of the power cord was adequate.

The hdd i want to use has a molex input will this need to be connected for the hard drive to be read by the adapater?will it not need additional power

Yes, if your hard drive has a molex input, you need connect it. It needs external power supply. It comes with an external power adapter and a molex input adapter.
