2010 release, the sixth album from the Alt-Rock duo. Band member Patrick Carney admits Brothers is the album they've always wanted to make and taps into their creative force as a duo. Review: Their best album yet - If you are a fan of the earlier Black Keys albums and didn't like "Attack and Release", then chances are you won't like this one, either. Having said that, I have to say that they have come a long way since the release of their first album "The Big Come Up" in 2002, and this is their best release, yet. True, it's not as high-energy as the earlier releases, but I think the guys have shown how much they've matured, musically. There is much more R&B and soul-influenced material on this album. It shows a deeper, more soulful, side of the band, in my opinion, and I like it. You could close your eyes and swear it was 1972, yet the music sounds fresh. They channel all of the funkiness of early '70's funk, soul, blues and R&B without sounding dated. How they can sound old, yet sound new at the same time, is beyond me! It's not as stripped-down and raw as the earlier albums, but it still has that funky, dirty, dark sound that you'd expect to hear on a Black Keys album. Growing up in cold, economically-depressed Akron, Ohio had something to do with that, no doubt. Glad to see that these guys are still going strong, and I'm proud to say that they're from my home state of Ohio! Review: The Black Keys successful change in direction - The Black Keys made their name making low-fi, DIY music with a minimalism not completely dissimilar than the early White Stripes work. Brothers is an amazing change in direction. You get the essence of the Black Keys, but with more instrumentation, whilst retaining the characteristic nod to music styles gone by. The album is more produced, but the producers (Dangermouse among them) have done a great job of retaining that raw bluesy edge to Dan Auerbach's voice whilst elevating it to somewhere else. It definitely feels less of the cuff and "done in one take" compared to The Black Key's Earlier works. Purists would be upset, but musicians have to be challenged by what they are making. I think the guys have done this well without alienating their oldest followers. The vinyl release of this is superb, it's worth paying for the wax, you can hear the "real" instrument aspect of the music, things like the sound of fingers running up and down strings. The Modus Operandi of the Black Keys also suits the retro aspect of owning your music on a 12 inch disc, with the black, white and red cover art really standing out.

Best Rock album in MANY years
Breakthrough rock album with unique qualities to balance the retro roots inspired rock. If you are older than 40 then this album is bound to make you remember riffs from bands from the 70' and 80' but the KEYS are truly modern rock artists with no other comparison to present day music. After listening to it for many months now and appreciating its qualities to evoke emotion all that I can hope is that these two guys from the midwest 'keep it real' and remember their roots. Don't stray guys and definitely don't let the music industry machine alter your beings. This album reminds of the days when I looked up from my high school bed and watched the sky turn purple and listened to entire albums from beginning to end like Jethro Tull or Led Zeppelin or Jimi Hendrix or Blood Sweat & Tears or ELO or The Moody Blues or U2 or Deep Purple or Blue Oyster Cult or... well you get the idea. I am sure you could apply the same logic to groups from another period 10 years later like The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

It's so good I had to buy it for a friend. "I am the bluest of blues everyday another way to loose".
Music these days suck. Everything is now auto tuned or dub stepped but this is what talent is about. Maybe it could be that I'm getting older (late 20's) or wished I could find other musicians that want to create music like this here in NYC. If you like the more blues style that you get from Queens of the Stone Age from Songs for the deaf & lullabies to paralyze CDs you will love this cd because its more blue. It is worth every penny. I find myself listening to this cd alone out of all their other work the most. My favorite songs are "too afraid to love you", "I'm not the one","sinister kid", & "go getter". My favorite lyrics is "I am the bluest of blues everyday another way to loose" from the song go getter.. The cd does come with a poster with lyrics & the cd does play tricks on you. It's black but when later played turns white while displaying the album name. This is in my collection with BB Kings "Thrill is gone" & James Browns "This is a mans world".

This is a great album by Black keys.

Will listen to this album when I get an opportunity to do so. Other than that, It's a masterpiece. My favourite song by The Black Keys is Howlin' For You which is the song that plays when the Arizona Coyotes score a goal. Highly recommend anyone who is new to Rock music to check out The Black Keys. They have many amazing songs.
