Perfect, gentle introduction to reality

This book is a fine piece of concise writing that describes the reality of surveillance including online monitoring and other related concepts of privacy. For those that are already educated in our surveillance society, this book may seem like a compilation of common sense. It is simply an introduction that overviews aspects of how all dimensions of life is being compiled into a formal database that caters to our self-interest. The best part of this book, beyond the information given, is the ease of reading. It is definitely NOT a challenging book. Unless you interpret it as a challenger of your perspective of life...then it may be challenging. As far as diction and syntax goes it is a totally easy read. I recommend this to anyone who possesses the slightest interest or curiosity in learning or becoming more knowledgeable in the operations of modern advertisement, tracking, and biopower/biopolitics.

Informative and an easy read

I came into this purchase with plenty of politics and sociology reading under my belt expecting another informative but possibly boring book.Boy was I wrong. This book is interesting, stimulating, and, above all, accessible to everyone who reads it. Gilliom and Monahan are meticulous in their dedication to being readable and it shows with their straightforward structure that isn't trying to hide anything from you. It's a slick design with plenty of bullet points and text boxes to break up the usual page to page monotony without leaving out important details. Instead of "just another textbook" SuperVision reads like a bestseller meant for the general public.I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn more about how their day to day life is scrutinized by major companies and its implications for you and me. I'm a student already overloaded with reading and this was an enjoyable book to read.

Nothing new here.

The writing is clear and concise. However, there is nothing new here. There are no shocking revelations here. Most of the stuff in the book is public knowledge. I also would had liked to see something in the book about how all of this surveillance the book describes is a good or bad, for society as a whole. The pro's and con's of it.

Eye opening

Bought this as I decided to study Surveillance at university and this book was a great introduction into the whole subject. As a student I found the book easy to read and grasp onto its ideas. However, I couldn't grasp onto whether it was critueqing or supporting surveillance (maybe this is just me). This book explains the countless ways of how society monitors and controls people and for this reason I hope that everyone reads it. So, I recommend to not only students but normal day to day people to help them gain an insight into the extent of surveillance society and how privacy does not exist.Enjoyed reading every minute and it helped me learn a lot. So for that it gets a thumbs up from me!
