## Description

The Triplett TDR100 is a precision cable tester that uses TDR (Time Domain Reflectometer) technology to measure cable length. It can be used for any cable consisting of at least 2 insulated metallic elements, one of which may be the sheath or shield of the cable. The meter has automatic internal matching networks to allow testing with automatic selection range, which correspond to power, telephony, CAT V, LAN, etc. cables. The meter can be closely matched with the cable under test using the function selection keys. The velocity of propagation value (V.O.P.) can be similarly adjusted to match the cable under test, ensuring an accurate distance measurement. It features a 2.4" TFT color display with an easy-to-use onscreen menu, 20 built-in groups of standard cable V.O.P. (velocity of propagation) values, and 99 memory locations store traces for future analysis. An Auto-Sensitivity function provides a closer match to a wide range of cables with only the V.O.P. settings required. The meter comes complete with 2 AA batteries, BNC (M) connector to standard test leads, BNC (M) connector to alligator clips, BNC (M) connector to (M) F connector, and carrying case.

Review: Product Works. Trust Results? Support Not So Great. - I bought this tester to try to determine where there was a break in the direct burial Cat 6 Ethernet cable. It did help me initially find the first break. However, while repairing the cable I was getting odd reading. I would test from one end of the cable, it would show the cable length as say 50 feet. I would go to the opposite end of the cable and run the same test, where it would show 75 feet. I contacted their support by phone, someone picked up both times. But I had to speak with I believe he was referred to as an engineer. I left my contact info and was told the person will be in touch. The individual called, left a voicemail with his contact info. I tried calling back on at least 3 occasions with no luck in reaching the individual that left the voicemail. I'm sure this testing tool probably does the job, but without any real documentation on how and why you get the results you do, it sure makes it difficult to trust it as a diagnostic tool.
Review: Not scalable to various cable types - Attempting to use for 75Ohm cable but setting are limited. I was able to get it to work well enough for my situation, if the impedance was more scalable rather than pre selected this would be a much better tool. Fortunately it’s relatively cheap.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: can I run a test on a specific cable and then add a name to that specific cable that I tested?**
A: Yes you can but you have to do the naming on the PC. Once you plug in the tester you see test numbers and there is a place to name it.

**Q: Does this work with the older byte brothers model.**
A: No. Only LVPRO20 ,30, & 30SR are compatible with the VTM

**Q: Can i print the results**
A: Yes. Reports can be printed from a PC running LVPro Manager. The reports are NOT to be considered CERTIFICATION. In my opinion it is a great tool for it's features and price. Don't expect it (or any low cost tester) to perform the same level of diagnostics and documentation that a more costly CERTIFIER is designed to do. Triplett / Byte Brothers has a VERIFIER RWC1000K.  I don't own one but I trust that any installed cable that tests GOOD with it, will also pass data. I haven't done the research to determine the differences between a $320 dollar tool and one that costs between $2000 and $40,000.  I suppose that all depends on whether you are installing, maintaining or designing a data network. Years ago, I worked for a large company and had a $10,000 (at that time) Fluke tester that could tell me how far down the wire someone "stepped" on it using a visual waveform. The newer model of that tester is $20,000. The RW1000k looks good to me and won't break the bank.

**Q: will it test active network drops. can it be toned while network line is active ?**
A: You can select pairs to tone, so you could select pair 4,5 to avoid 10/100 (1,2 or 3,6) switch connections that could short out the tone. It also does port blinking for identifying ports on a live switch. Their website has good videos.
