Excellent 4 channel thermocouple thermometer
Update 04-07-2017 Ive been using this for while and still think its great. I just figured out that you can turn off the auto power down feature. First turn off the unit then hold the HOLD button down and turn it on. You only need to press the power button but keep the HOLD button pressed until it turns on. The auto power off icon is now gone from the display and it will remain on until you turn it off. The auto power off will come back the next time you turn it on. I really like this 4 channel thermocouple temperature meter. It was really easy to figure out how to use it and set it up for reading my film drying cabinet. It feels good in the hand, though i did mount it to the cabinet so i don't have to keep unplugging the thermocouples. It has Min/Max/Avg modes, they work great. The backlight has a hotspot and isn't totally even, not a big issue. It can also switch between C, F and K. Really useful. Turns on and off fast, readings are accurate (within the variance of the probes). Only complaint is the LCD doesn’t have a large viewing angle. Its only readable from a few angles. I have it up a bit above my head, so i look up at it. That’s a perfect viewing angle and the numbers are crisp. Other than that, i would highly recommend it. The price is good and the features, namely 4 channels cant be beat.

Good value if you compensate for the shortcomings
I work in the refrigeration industry, and figured I would give this thermocouple a chance purely based on the price point. The ability to connect four probes would cost a small fortune with one of the name brand devices. Purchasing two of their dual-probe units is way out of the budget. So I'll just break this into Pros and Cons. Pros: - Low price point. - Has all of the measurement features you would get from the $200+ units. - After troubleshooting against our more expensive lab equipment (details below), was able to achieve similar results. Cons: - I'm not a physicist, but I learned how thermocouples work when troubleshooting my accuracy test. "Thermocouple thermometers are composed of two conductors, usually alloys of the same metal, which touch at the sensor end of the thermometer. The difference in conductivity between the two metal pieces produces a voltage flow between the sensor end and the open end of each conductor, which can be used to determine the temperature." One challenge with this device is that the probe connection point has no means to shield itself. Therefore when I left the Thermocouple inside the refrigerated display, the conductivity increases in the metals and returned an inaccurate reading (far colder than actual). After letting everything warm back up that should be, when a similar test was done with the thermocouple outside of the refrigerated area, the device was within 0.2 degrees F of our lab testing equipment when measuring in the -10 to +30 degree F range. Relatively simple solution, however more the far more expensive thermocouples I've used don't have this issue. Solution: Purchased 6' probes (cheap, and also much better quality that the probes included). - Like another reviewer, one of the internal screws that mounts the internal board to the case mounting points was bouncing around inside when i opened the box. When I fixed it, it seated perfectly, so I'm not sure how it's possible to come free like that. Easy fix, but you'd think that someone would have noticed before putting the "QC" sticker on the device...

Durable, accurate, easy to use... oh, and it's cheap too!
I can't understand the negative reviews. I was skeptical but needed to fill this order as inexpensively as I could. I purchased this feeling that I would no doubt have to replace it soon after purchasing. But, at this price I considered it "disposable" and didn't worry to much. Without going into unnecessary details, my unit takes fearsome abuse. It is regularly checked against two analogue standards and is working much better than expected! It has never failed to deliver rock solid performance on all four channels. Given all four probes are identical, each reading from the same location is the same (given the units stated tolerances) It could be that quality control is lacking, that I got a lucky break and the others maybe more unlucky. However, I now have need for a second unit and will be purchasing another. We'll see how I do. Edit: Second unit purchased. In use for six months, perfect just like the first. Keep in mind, the second unit was purchased more than a year after the first. If there were a quality control problem, odds are good I would have seen a problem with one of the two units. This leads to me believe the negative reviews on this item are not be taken seriously. Edit: Years of daily use, both going strong. These units take serious punishment and keep working. Highly recommended! EDIT: Three years later, both working strong. Better yet, compared with a colleagues much more expensive unit, these units have proven to be more accurate. More consistent when measured against analogue standards.

Temps show within 0.9*f at 72*f ambient .. Updated .. 5 Stars
Well, I just got this today and haven't actually used it yet, but I wanted to just give a Heads-Up if you get one. Mine came with Zero instructions/manual. These "K" type thermo-couples DO have a polarity, but is not well indicated on both the instrument, or the individual probes. So put on your Opti-Visor and get your thinnest Sharpie to mark it up. Each probe has a very small "+" sign on the plug .. just graze the "plus" with your Sharpie. The plug well is also marked very faintly .. Plus goes to the rear .. Minus facing you. I also numbered them on the plugs .. to reduce some confusion as I place all four probes. As to accuracy, it's gotta be better than what I get with either of my infra-red hand-held thermometers. At ambient temperature .. about 72*f, all four probes are within 0.9*f, which is certainly adequate for my application. My application is a 10KVA 440vac transformer converted to an 80 amp 60 volt battery charger .. running off of 220. The hand-helds show temps that are way high between the coils, and for $33 bucks, this instrument should put my concerns to rest, or prompt some additional thermal modeling. Lost a star due to lack of a manual/instructions, but it's pretty simple/intuitive, as long as you plug in the probes with their correct polarity. Cheers! and .. $7 bucks for http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0044NI2M2 .. non-hardening UPDATE on 4 April 2016. I'm raising this review to 5 Stars, as I've had time to put this product under test, and not dinking around with some "mobo" rework, as used by another reviewer. The photo is of a 10KVA "bucking" transformer converted for use as a 5KVA battery charger. The probes are measuring inside and the outside of left coil, the base of the bridge heat-sink on 3, and the 200A fuse on probe 4. Probe 4 was later simply placed inside the blast cover, without tape or thermal goop, for a much more accurate (and dramatically higher) reading. In following instructions for an $800 unit, I found that by holding the Backlight Button IN, while powering up, the unit will stay ON, until you intentionally power it Off, which for me in my application, was my complaint. I'll continue to use it for thermal modeling/placement of 4 x 80mm fans for forced air cooling. 5 Stars

Awful
Absolutely horrible. Used it a few times and it can register higher temps. Used it for mobo reworking.

They sent me a new one Originally titled Does not log temps....but not too bad for the price.
Update March 2017. I contacted the seller a couple months ago to see if I was doing something wrong in trying to log the temps. They said I have the wrong version and they would send me another one. It arrived a few days ago. That was a real surprise. I am changing my ranking due to this. January 2017 Not too bad for the price however it does not log temperatures into memory. The instruction manual specifically states you can store readings into one of twenty locations but I was not able to activate that function. The entire store / recall function is missing even though there are keys for it. The display updates about once a second. With all four probes plugged in the readings were within 0.5 degrees of each other...as long as you let it settle. Absolute accuracy seems to be within a degree also.

A great tool. Not perfectly accurate but within a degree +-.
Works very well and for the price, it's a great tool. I have a small air cooled engine car that I wanted to monitor each head individually to tune the separate carburetors and avoid burning up one cylinder. It is very handy for everything from cooking steak to monitoring my HVAC system. It is very handy to know what the temperature differential is from ambient, supply, return and indoor.

Doesn't work in electrically noisy environments.
I bought this unit to check the temperatures of the fuel system of an engine, trying to find the source of vapor lock. Before doing that, I checked the calibration by placing all four probes in boiling water. All four channels read within 1.5 degrees F of the boiling point at my altitude. So I went ahead and spent half a day installing the probes in the engine compartment. Before starting the engine, I turned on the meter, they all read 68F. Imagine my dismay when I fired up the engine and all the channels just went nuts, bouncing from 30 degrees to 450 degrees and everything in between. The readings were totally worthless. When I shut the engine off, the readings went back to normal. Obviously this unit is unable to read correctly where there is electrical noise from spark plugs or electrical fuel pumps. The unit works well on the bench but forget about using it for real-world testing. I wasted my money.

Very good product, recomended
Good product, react as advertised, good precision. Bad reviews here (concerning BIG errors in measuring temperature), are made by guys that do not pay attention connecting sensors (including me, for a while (: ). There is a "+" and a "-" written on the sensor connector and on the device. After correctly connected and testing temperature (by putting all sensors in a plastic bag, near one to another) all had same indication (17.3C), two of them stable and two of them slowly changing indication from 17.2 to 17.3C and back. Changing the connection port of the 2 "unstabled" sensors did not affect the indication, but the position in the plastic bag did. As a result, I concluded the there is a VERY GOOD calibration from factory, the sensors are (at least at delivery time) ABSOLUTELY THE SAME, interchangeable. Be careful not to modify connector temperatures (by hand by example) as this will generate erroneous signals, and be displayed by the device. If needed to be used at another (very different) ambient temperature than 20C (or 21C - I don't remember), it may be possible to re-calibrate the device, as per instructions (for exemple to be used outside at -15C or at +40C). At such distant temperatures, the connectors (the contact between device and sensor wires) will generate enough erroneous TEM voltage to fail your precision of the measurement. Also, as per manufacturer recommendations, let device 30 minutes in the ambient BEFORE measuring, to minimise the gradient of temperatures inside the device. Another observation is that in the first 5-10 seconds after power-up there is a different indication (few 0.1C) more then displayed later, when it became stable. I suppose stable temperature is good, as this is how the calibration was done. (as self-explained, it may be a "mini-heating" of the probe by the measurement itself or by powering-on - this is documented and normal for measuring with thermoresistance - but somehow applied to thermocouples).
