JHS Pedals 3 Series Reverb

Fantastic pedal! Simple... Practical... Brilliant! The low octave is phenomenal! Put it behind a chorus pedal and it adds the subtle sound of pure magic to your clean tone. There is just something about this sound that inspires you to play. The high octave is... well... it's your typical shimmer and it's done very well. It's bright and it sings when you need it to. I was loving it until the low octave stole the show. Now I can't flip the switch back up without missing the low octave. It is a piece of cake to dial in the sound you are looking for with the simple 3 dial, 1 switch layout. This is really a unique pedal and it's not just a one trick pony. For the price, this pedal is great and the build quality is solid. The only thing that could make this pedal better would be the ability to use both octaves simultaneously. That being said, JHS has made something special with this Octave Reverb pedal... and they did it at a super price point.

In a market full of classic fuzz concepts and extreme fuzz-stortion, this pedal finds a remarkable balance. I've been using it in recording along with the Dunlop JHW1 fuzz-face style pedal, and what can I say, it's been a pleasure to compare the two. I'll do that here so you have a better sense of my take on this lovely pedal. I'm not yet an a-fuzz-ionado (see what I did there?) but I definitely hear the differences between these pedals. The Series 3 sounds rich, full, and has an air of precision. There are no harmonics out of place. It's tight, even in the lower mids. It's a well-dressed sound so to speak, and it creates a load of excitement and energy in riffs or leads. Its added gate feature is a serious advantage giving you much more than a single fuzz, but a spectrum of fuzz sound. Yes, it's a sputtery lead tool. But it also tapers off some lower midrange frequencies to tighten up the tone, and can be used to cut out some of the low mids without reaching the sputter point. In re-amping, this knob is a dream, as the pot is dead silent and can be used to modify the tone as you record it! I sent JHS an email wondering why the FAT switch wasn't working - but it was my mistake, sorry JHS! The UP position is the fat position, which is counter-intuitive to the labeling. Anyway. I still can't tell if FAT is just "normal," and the off switch is a low cut. That's probably wrong, but that's how the pedal actually feels. Withe BIAS wide open, the FAT Switch lets you push the thickness of your leads or riffs. So think about it: BISA lets you thin out, and FAT lets you full up. On a fuzz with no tone knob, you have some really lovely tonal shaping and I prefer this actually. Now to compare it to the JHW1. The JHW1 does not have as much bite (attack) as the Series 3, which comes across clear and crisp without being harsh. The JHW1 comes with a germanium switch, and I have found the germanium sits really nicely in the mix for fuzz sounds that you want to kind of "flatten" into the track a little, so they can appear with more subtlety while still being distorted. That's just a high frequency roll-off, but hell if it isn't perfectly dialed in. The germanium is also a little squishy. I could say its more watercolor while the silicon is oil or acrylic. I hate to admit that the JHW1 does have a little more emotional character, which comes out in the midrange harmonics around 400-1000hz. If I had to make up a word I would say the Series 3 is less "bloomy." On the other hand, the JHW1, a silicon pedal as well, simply cannot do what the Series 3 fuzz does, which is create crystal clear, discrete, thrilling fuzz that happens to be beautiful in its own strident, firm way. Of course, either pedal can be made to work toward other emotional expressions. But this is generally how I hear them; one a little sad and melancholic, the other strong and confident - and both soaring. For $99, this fuzz is an absolute steal, especially if you're looking to play some energized stuff!

For a simple phaser, you cannot go wrong here. I bought this after success with a few other 3 series pedals and it does not disappoint. The sound is fantastic and easy to dial in. The feedback toggle adds a different dimension of sound that allows the pedal to take on a different type of phasing. Very please with the purchase, especially for the price.

These guys make great pedals. Their 3 series are affordable classics. Their stuff makes up half of my main pedalboard. Simple controls, beautiful circuits. The elegant look is a give-away. Josh makes great stuff.

I feel a little a guilty for rating the JHS Octave Reverb 4 stars, because I am a fan of the pedal and of the $99 "Series 3" pedals from JHS, generally. First, the good stuff: PROS: JHS has been in business for many years offering largely modded, boutique versions of classic circuits, as well as a handful of their own unique designs. Their pedals are well-built and full of features, but the full-size ones were also $200 or more, almost without exception. However, they recently released this "Series 3" lineup, all of which are $99, and offer stripped-down versions of basic effects in a generic-yet-well-built compact enclosure. The Octave Reverb was a late addition to that lineup, and actually quite unique for its price point. It's difficult to find any quality reverb pedals under $100, let alone something attempting a "shimmer" effect, which refers to an ambient effect that layers higher octaves (and sometimes modulation) on the long decay of your tone. The Octave Reverb mostly succeeds at this task, and is more versatile than it first appears. There are three knobs (Reverb level, Octave level, and Decay time), plus a switch that changes whether a lower or higher octave is added to the decay. By turning the Octave knob all the way down, you can even run the pedal as an almost-straight reverb effect, similar to a hall reverb. The shimmer effect on octave up sounds quite nice, especially when you crank the reverb and decay knobs for a swampy, dreamy effect. CONS: Again, none of the "cons" of this pedal are dealbreakers, and they are all completely fair for a $100 pedal. But given the stripped-down interface, you are likely to feel like you are missing control over the shimmer effect if you've ever had experience with that effect on other pedals. I find that you really have to experiment with some "unorthodox" settings on the knobs, but the results are pretty good once you get there. The base (non-octave) reverb sort of swells in a little with a slow attack, and this cannot be adjusted. The shimmer "up" tone is pretty nice, but a little flat sounding, and you cannot make it brighter, duller, modulated, etc. The shimmer "down" tone is a nice alternative to have, but it is actually quite hard to hear in the mix. I generally only use that setting if I am trying to hide the octave and use it as a straight reverb pedal. Overall, this was first of the Series 3 pedals that I decided to buy, but that was mostly because I already had other versions of most of the other drive, delay, modulation, and reverb pedals offered in the lineup. It's certainly a worthy addition at this price point, and I'm probably even more interested in using it with synths versus guitar.

It's taken me a little bit to get this dialed in but I love the sound and it seems to be built like a tank. The light showing you the speed it's set at is useful. Had a Phase 90 and like this better, especially with the blend knob.

Been using Rats since the 90s and make no mistake this pedal is basically an improved Rat 2 pedal only cleaner sounding. It has more low end and a more defined sound. The EQ has a nicer treble or “top end” to it. My Rat 2 in comparison sounds harsh. I have the newer Rat 2 after my made in USA one was never returned. The toggle switch is a great feature. The down position adds more saturation and compression, which is a little better for palm mutes (although this pedal isn’t really made for that kind of thing, but it’ll nail that 70s rock sound). The up toggle position has less gain but it’s way louder and has a little more bass to it and it’s thicker sounding. This mode is excellent for big thick crunch sounds and is more fuzz like. Honestly this pedal is amazing value for money. I looked at the Walrus Audio Iron Horse but this pedal won me over as it’s way more affordable and it looks awesome. The JHS 3 series are a work of art, less is more and the art work on the pedals is clean and minimalistic and it’s grown on me big time. Very vintage sci fi looking. I’m now looking to get the delay and chorus next. It’s every bit as good as my JHS Angry Charlie. Deffo worth the money. This is an amazing distortion pedal for stoner rock and even perfect for blues!

I was afraid JHS' budget line would sacrifice quality; but this stomp box has everything I'd expect from a more expensive JHS pedal. Inspecting the quality of the internal parts is mindblowing, this thing is built solidly with some of the nicest looking solder joints I've seen in a mass manufactured pedal and with high quality components. The sound ranges from a light bathroom-ish reverb all the way up to a crazy long-trail ambient sound. I especially like turning the EQ knob and decay knob to max, and getting a crazy almost feedback static noise that I'm sure I'll hear on an indie rock record in the future. Aside from seeing how crazy it gets, this pedal nails it on a professional sounding normal reverb effect. Don't expect any 'drip' like a spring reverb unit, this pedal airs to a more modern sound. I have an EHX Holy Grail Max that I've loved for it's versatility; but it just got replaced by the JHS series 3 on my board for having simple controls and one of the most useable reverbs I've played. Also, the pre-delay switch is great, I love it to add a slapback effect with my reverb.

I like this company because of their YouTube videos and I wanted to support them. This was a cheaper way to do that. They probably have a video about a cheaper Phaser that is great, so there might be a better budget option out there. I do like the sounds this pedal can make and good build quality.

Non mi sento di consigliarlo. Il pedale è sicuramente di qualità e trovo ottimo il delay di questa serie. Con il blend credevo di poter ottenere un risultato migliore, mi sbagliavo, l'effetto o era troppo sottile o troppo pronunciato e in entrambi i casi abbassava il volume.Con il basso l'ho trovato abbastanza inutilizzabile.
