Having a background in electronics definitely helps as the projects and instructions do seem to require a level above novice to make things go smoother but my son loves it. The components included really do offer a variety of things to do (even more than what's shown with a little knowledge). This has been a great set that has helped encourage my son to explore new things associated with these types of activities.
