I think it was when there was water in the upper filtering area and also in the lower area, I'm not sure. I'll probably eventually drill a small hole in the back of the pitcher to get around this problem. What I have done to get around most of these problems is to use this pitcher to fill up other pitches of water. I happened to have two of these around: Takeya Airtight Pitcher, 2-Quart, Black and they suit my purpose well.
