Would it be a bad idea to use a light coat of the spray cleaner and then use this as a top coat?

Yes, I use it this way as well. I clean the chain with SONAX degreaser (green spray bottle) wash it off with water, blow dry the chain and apply motul lube.

What is the lubricants base? does it contain ptfe (teflon), moly or other "really bad" chemicals?

I googled " Motul C5 chain paste MSDS" in hopes that the material safety datasheet might list hazardous/active ingredients. The MSDS says there are no hazardous ingredients to be concerned about.

How many applications do you get from the 5.7oz. tube?

How long a tubes lasts depends on how often you use it. But I get about six for each tube, assuming a clean chain.

Do you wipe the excess paste or just let it rock?

With the brush tip you should not have to wipe anything off
