AK Interactive ultra matte varnish #183

Amazing matte finish! I'd painted some figures with thin acrylics and they left a gloss sheen. I tried a different brand of matte which was just as glossy as the paint. On a suggestion from a friend, I tried this and what a difference! Knocked all the shine off and gave it beautiful matte finish. Easy to brush or apply by airbrush, well worth the money. Dries quickly and goes a long way.

I have been a Testors Dullcote user as my matte varnish brand for years (decades really) I had noticed more recently though, depending on the type of paint/addition I would use, it was leaving more shine than I'd like.It seems to me the old recipe for the matte was changing.I decided to give AK Interactive's Matte varnish a try. It can be used easily through an airbrush, but I like using a brush. After waiting for to dry, I was surprised by how well it worked! Dead flat finish. That was more like the Dullcote for years ago.It really improves the look of my model. With miniatures detail is very small, even a slight sheen of gloss will not allow all the details to be noticed. With a dead flat finish, there is no glare to distract from the colors I've chosen. It just pulls the miniature together more cohesively and is a great benefit to photography as well.AK Interactive is now the only Matte varnish I will use.

One of my favorite acrylic matte varnishes. When they say “Ultra Matte” they mean it. Goes on smooth with airbrush with no thinning and dries quickly.

This was recommended to me by a professional mini-painter, so I tried it out. It worked brilliantly. It's thinner than Citadel Stormshield (their brush-on matte finish) but it dries much flatter, with zero gloss.You do need to be careful, however. Applying matte finish with a brush can actually lift some of the pigment from the surface of the model, so don't brush back and forth or you'll make a mess of things. And that's fine, just one pass with the brush is enough to protect the model.This dried super-flat, and perfectly clear. The metallics lost a little bit of their specular shine, but that's to be expected.

This is the best matte clear I have ever found. It truly takes all the sheen out. Some other flat clears actually provide an eggshell or even a satin finish when brushed on. It actually enhanced the grunge and wear on some clothing on a zombie model I am painting. The first photo is before I applied the matte varnish.

I saw a miniature painting tutorial that mentioned mixing this 1:1 with Contrast Medium and painting the mixture over minis when finished painting, then letting dry 20 min before sealing spray, in order to give it a matte finish without "taking the life out" of the mini. It absolutely worked! My mini came out looking much more real than my initial paint job.It's thin but easy to apply and not too drippy. I didn't need much to mix and cover the whole mini. Will definitely be using again!

Like other AK Interactive products this is of excellent quality. It is particularly valuable when a very matte finish (for example, to subsequently apply pastels or washes) surface is n is fed.

Highly recommend for any miniature painter. Coats real nice with an airbrush. Maintain a good matte finish. Mix it with inks to get rid of their glossiness. Very easy to use.
