Pure nicotinic acid
Forget the one star reviews. If you don’t know regular niacin is going to cause a flush potentially then you shouldn’t be buying it. I’ve bought other niacin supplements that don’t do anything. This is the real deal. You can open the cap up (no it’s not caplets as someone said. That’s stated plainly. So start smaller. But this is only 50. So your body will adjust to it. And it’s not an allergic reaction. That’s what niacin can/does do. The FLUSH. I agree it’s overpriced, but you get what you pay for.

Seems good but have to wait for tests
As I have read other reviews of this and other Niacin products, I wanted to add some information. I am using this to see if I can reduce my overall cholesterol and raise my HDLs. I can't answer if this has worked or not as I have to wait for my next metabolic panel test. But, I do know that I am within a percentage of the population for which statin medications don't work. I can update when I know the results. What I have learned, though, is that there are two types of Niacin; niacinamide and nicotinic acid. Studies on these can be found at NCBI NIH. I recommend reading these as supplements tend to be overrated for what they can do. The studies document actual observations.Having said this, I've seen some say they have never experienced the flush before. I get that it is annoying, but it is the nicotinic acid that causes the flush, the niacinamide does not. However, the niacinamide will not impact your cholesterol levels, as documented in the studies. It is the nicotinic acid that does. It is the flush that shows it is doing this.As for the flush, niacin (B3) is a water soluble vitamin which means it is flushed out of the body by water. When you reach your saturation level, this is when you'll feel the flush. That is why it is recommended to start with a low dose and work up; to know where your saturation level is. It is different for each person. Once you reach this point, there is no need to go beyond. You can even dial back a little if you wish.I still have the flush when I eat food with the pills, I just don't feel the tingling. I only get the blush. Without food, I definitely feel the flush, but it only lasts for about 30 minutes. The one thing I'd ask is that the company make a 100 mg pill. That is my saturation level, and it would be better to take one versus two at a time.

Full effect niacin
I was glad to find lower doses of Niacin that still allow the rush of blood flow through the body. It is one of the few things that help the symptoms of some of my most painful headaches. It completely opens the vessels. The time release provides no flushing or complete opening of the vessels so quickly for me.. Previous to this dosage I was trying to divide 500mg capsules, which is very inconvenient. At such a low dosage it helps my sister, also. I still take antacids and use it on an empty stomach, but I wouldn't recommend taking it that way that for most people. I just want to get the full results in the quickest time but it can be irritating to the stomach. My sister eats first,I seldom take any vitamins separately, but this and a few others I use alone in larger doses for a specific purpose.

The real thing
As a nurse, I thought this lower dose niacin would provide the cardiovascular benefits without the flushing/itching associated with higher doses. I was wrong. I flushed bright red like a minister caught in a house of ill repute. I literally glowed for half an hour and my hands and feet tingled and itched. I seriously confused my cat as I scrubbed my hands and feet on the carpet trying to alleviate the maddening itch. I now have several scratches and some mild bleeding, but I guess I can’t blame the niacin for that. I was warned. They say this gets better over time and to try taking it with food (probably should keep the cat away too, just in case).

INCONSISTENT FLUSHING
I have high cholesterol and cannot take statins due to potential fatal side effects so have been trying for last several years to find something to help. I came across information showing that Niacin (flushing necessary to be effective)was used for cholesterol prior to statins being available. Suddenly Niacin was being vilified as possibly causing strokes and heart attacks due to high dosage (500 mg)required for cholesterol control. I decided to try Niacin, lower dosage, thinking that over time it could possibly help lower my numbers even by a little. After researching I came across this product and decided to try it. Well, recommended dosage for women is 14 mg a day and this product was 25 mg. so started slow by opening capsule and using half of it. There was not even a hint of flushing so after 1 week took whole capsule, had 1 day where decent flushing occurred, then a few days later a very minor flushing. Whenbottle was half empty I increased to using 1 1/2 capsule and again had 1 minor flushing so after 3 days I increased to 2 capsules and finally had a decent flush. The product is not worth the money as undependable. I have purchased a different product that is powder and I will measure out my own, starting again with recommended dosage and increasing it if necessary. If it works I will do a review of it and come back and update this review saying if new product works. I get new labs in January so will see if my numbers are improved at the lower than 500 mg. dosage used by patients in the past.
