Though I have not had any need to clean as of yet, this access should make it easy. **Q: What size is the entrance hole?** A: Hole is a little more then an inch in dia **Q: are they able to get in without a perch?** A: Birds do not need a perch to get in a bird house. I think it’s nice for them to have a perch but they don’t need one. The house is really cute and has a back door so it’s easy to clean out when needed. **Q: What kind of wood is it made from?** A: Not sure. Possibly a pine or balsa. Very light, like a 1/4 inch plywood. Fairly well made but with cracks. I used a silicone seal in areas of concern. Overall a nice product.
