setting for placer gold?

Yes it has a gold setting...though its not the best. Unless the placer is in a mine mixed with ore right on top of the ground you're not going to have much luck. (at depth) This bounty hunter gives off a low tone for gold. (which is also the tone for a lot of trash like nickle) Bounty hunter makes another detector called the "Gold Hunter" which would be better suited for placer. Cost is about $50 more but worth it. Will this particular detector work well in wet sand or in overall wet conditions? I live in a very wet climate and would love to get my family one

Yes this thing works fine in wet conditions. (the coil at the bottom is actually waterproof and you can submerge it underwater) No problem with wet dense sand. Unless you live in a rain forest, it should be fine.

Can this use other size coils?

The Lone Star is equipped with an 8 inch submersible searchcoil, but it is compatible with the Bounty Hunter 4 inch Gold Nugget Search Coil (search for B0008DBP7Q) and the Bounty Hunter 10 inch Magnum Search Coil (search for B0008DBP8U). Both the 4 inch and 10 inch coils are not included with the Lone Star but can be purchased separately.
