Something old but new!
I didn't want to write a review about this product immediately and give a false review. I have had this DE razor now several weeks and can say it was a great investment. For a while now, I have been frustrated with buying expensive razor refills for my fusion razor and decided I wanted to try something old but new. I figured I would try jumping on the new trend of going back to an old style of shaving with no gimmicks. After looking at several review websites of DE razors I decided on this one. It seemed like a good intro razor for DE razor shaving. It has exceeded my expectations by far and wouldn't even consider putting my fusion razor back against my face, I have given the remainder of my fusion blades away. The razor itself has a nice hefty feel in your hand and feels sold, the textured handle has plenty of grip so it doesn't slip in your wet hands while shaving. I like the fact that the handle is black because I'm not a fan of all things chrome. This razor comes in a short and long handle design, I chose the long handle design because I am use to the handle length of the current razors out on the market so I didn't have to worry about adjusting how I hold it with a traditional short handle DE razor. I will say there is a learning curve, visit a blog or two on DE razor technique and you will understand what I mean. I get the same close shave as I have with my fusion now that I am starting to become more comfortable with DE razor Technique. I would say I have an average beard and with the right blade this razor will slice right through it. I found the merker blade that came with it to be a bit blah and not up to the job so I bought a 80 blade variety pack to see what can tame these wild whiskers. So far the Gillette 7oclock and feather blades have been top contenders for my go to blades with this razor. Hope any or all of this info helps you with your razor choice. In closing, if it was good enough for dad Then it's good enough for me. Sometimes the things of old were never broken and we shouldn't have tried to fix them, DE shaving is one of them. There is no need for fancy multi blade razors!

Fantastic Razor for Entering the Wet-Shave World
I purchased this razor as my entry into the world of traditional, wet shaving. At first, I tried another razor with a standard (i.e. short) handle. After years of using cartridge razors with long handles, it wasn't as comfortable for me. Thus, I searched for a better overall quality brand in a long handle version. I came across the Merkur 20C and am extremely happy with how it performs. Pros: - Excellent weight and balance. - Pattern on handle allows for solid grip even when wet. - Good length, especially for larger hands or those transitioning to this type of razor. - Excellent quality construction makes this an exceptional value for the price paid. - Outstanding entry razor...but may just be the only one you ever need. - Attractive appearance. Cons: - Only includes one blade in the package. Overall, I am extremely happy with the razor and the value that I received at this price point. Overall I'm extremely happ

Razor with less cuts; fine balance
Prior owner of a Edwin Jagger safety razor, which was a little too top heavy which resulted in knicks & cuts on occasion. I switched to Merkur on a suggestion of a friend and it was a good move. The grip handle material provides better connectivity to the hand; the balance is evenly weighed and, the shave is lighter providing no knicks & cuts. I gave it 4-stars because even though it is lighter and 'safer' IMO, the shave is not as "clean/close" as the Edwin, nor does it look as nice. However, after all that being said, the Merkur, overall is a better SAFETY razor for my skill set.

Great DE safety razor, especially for beginners
This is my first DE safety razor, and I'm loving it! It's lighter than the other DE safety razors I've held, but still feels substantial in-hand. It's absolutely possible to shave by just letting the weight of the razor carry it down your face. The weight is concentrated closer to the head of the razor, which I personally like. The balance point is right at the top of the black section, which is good because it allows for easier maneuvering when going perpendicular to the grain. This ease of use makes it great for beginners like myself. Quality on all components is stellar, and this razor is extremely durable. I've already dropped it twice... it did more damage to my floor than it did to itself both times! I have no doubt that with proper care, this thing can last a decade or more under normal use. It fits both physically and aesthetically with the SimplyBeautiful stand in black, and I got an Escali brush to go with. I also use Personna blades, and Proraso cream in the red bottle.

Just what I was looking for!
Great razor, the handle is long, nicely knurled so it doesn't slip even when your hands are wet and covered in shaving gel! Very well made, beautiful razor, simply rinses off, wipe with a towel and it retains it's shine! Couldn't be happier, finally ditched over-priced underperforming electric razors and went back to a DE safety razor! I'd forgotten how nice it is to get a very nice shave! And if you're a newbie or considering DE razors, fear not. It's not nearly as scary as some make it sound, just let the razor glide, don't press down and you'll be fine! Haven't nicked myself once, but it does take a few shaves to get the technique down. But it's well worth it. Frankly it's faster too as I had to go over the same area numerous times with my electric, and still didn't get a close shave! Finish off with Pinaud Clubman after shave, feels great!

It's a good razor but not what I was looking for
It's a good razor but not what I was looking for. The add says extra long but in reality is only about 4.5 inches. I had my wrist replaced and have problems with my hand, so I need something bigger. It does have a great feel, and gives a great shave but it isn't "extra long"

Stop spending $4/cartridge for a bad shave! Buy this razor!
I've been thinking about jumping into the world of double-edge safety razors for a while. I've been using Gillette Fusion ProGlide for several years now, and it got to the point where I hated shaving. Though I don't grow much of a beard, my skin is pretty sensitive. Not only did I not get a close shave from the ProGlides, but I would get about 6 shaves per cartridge before it felt like I was shaving with a cheese grater. I certainly didn't get anywhere close to the 5 weeks of comfortable shaves that they claim. At about $4 a cartridge, it finally got to the point where neither my wallet nor my face could take it anymore. Enter the Merkur 20C. This was my first safety razor purchase, and it very well be my last! This thing is beautiful, well made, and, with proper care, I expect it to last a lifetime. The razor has good weight to it, but it's well balanced, and very intuitive to use. The spiral knurling on the handle ensures a good grip even when wet. The head is shaped so that it only shaves when held at the correct angle against your face. I now look forward to shaving each morning. It has become a relaxing part of my morning routine. I pair this baby up with a Personna Double Edge Razor Blade and some Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream , and I've never gotten a closer shave. I still only get about 6 shaves per blade, but at least they only cost about $0.13 instead of $4. I would highly recommend this razor to anyone who is thinking of joining the double-edge safety razor wet shaving community or to someone who's looking for a new safety razor. Stop spending $4/cartridge for a bad shave! Buy this razor and start enjoying shaving again.

Solid Choice & Supurb Quality (Better than Expected)
The 20C is a very unique, high quality, and underrated safety razor from Merkur. I really liked the sleek black design, long handle variation (as compared to the 30C), 3 piece design, and the praised standard Merkur head which comes highly recommended for those new to the wet shaving game. It was exactly what I was looking for, but some of the lower rated reviews led me to believe the machining and quality of production was inferior to other Merkur safety razors and/or similar safety razors in general. After tentatively placing my order, I was pleasantly surprised with what I received. Once it arrived and was unboxed, initial inspection had me quite impressed by the overall heft and quality. This thing was built well and I have no doubt that it will probably outlast me. To alleviate any concerns potentially brought about by other reviews - the razor I received arrived in pristine condition and both the chrome and black knurling is absolutely perfect. I have no scratches, scuffs, dents, or dings to speak of. As far as I'm concerned, this safety razor was evidently manufactured with great care and precision that one would expect from a quality Merkur product. I really like the spiraled texture of the black metal handle, the grooves of which were a little less smooth/dull feeling than I had imagined. It's a bit hard to explain, but the texture feels similar to the touch as regular knurling does - just in a single lined spiral pattern. That being said, it provides excellent grip, even under the wet and lathery conditions of shaving. The overall length is also still short enough to comfortably and aesthetically fit the typical razor / brush holder stands, if that's also a concern. All things considered, I couldn't be happier with my purchase and I'm glad I decided to go for it. If this design appeals to you as well, I suggest that you don't hesitate to try this safety razor - it certainly doesn't disappoint!

EXCELENTE

Stylish and smooth DE razor
I have a small collection ! :), of DE razors that i have acquired over the years. DE shaving can easily become a bit of a hobby / obsession :) I bought this Merkur 20c long handle here on Amazon in June 2016 and it has become my go-to favourite. It looks stylish, the matt black (aluminium) long knurled handle gives a good grip and the shave head is very smooth and forgiving - i get none or very few nicks using this razor. Build quality is very high and both the chrome head and the black handle look as good now as on day 1 after more than 2 years of use. Compared to other DE razors, i would say its a medium but smooth shave head - it really is a good design. Only 2 small gripes - the spiral knurled handle holds soap in the grooves and needs cleaning a little more regularly, but its not a huge issue - you need an old toothbrush or just let the razor soak in hot water for a while to clean the handle. Up side is that the handle has really good non-slip grip when shaving. Secondly its a three piece razor, so takes a fraction longer to change blades - again, not a big issue. This razor head works well with any type of blade, but its smooth nature means it works a little better with a slighlty more aggressive blade type. When i am travelling or need a knick-free shave guaranteed, i can just put a mild blade in and its almost as forgiving as a cartridge razor, but you still get a DE close shave. 10/10 highly recommended (BTW, Merkur do a short handled version of this same razor, confusingly called the 30c.)

Comfortable Shave
Been using this razor for a month after getting back into wet shaving again. It's great for beginners giving a moderate and comfortable shave. I use it with Darby blades which are also very comfortable to use. The combination works well for daily shaving. Can't fault the razor for a new user or someone getting back into it. The shave could be closer but not getting any nicks or cuts and no skin irritation is a bonus especially when shaving almost every day.
