The socket piece has two ways for the cord to come out. It can go straight down so that the cord can come out the bottom of a lamp (hole already there) or it can come out the side when you don't have a lamp base with a hole in it. You would need a way to attach it to the lid of a mason jar...I wouldn't know how to go about doing that. It does have a support rod that attaches to the bottom of the socket, so that could go into the lid if you drilled a hole. **Q: where can i get a lamp shade that fits in with this kit?** A: You can get any lamp shade that fits on top of the harp under the finial. It is not necessary to use the harp that is in the kit if you have (or want) a shade that fits down at the bottom of the light bulb.
