These things are great! I’m not an hvac tech by trade but for a guy who works on all his own stuff these things are one of the best things I’ve ever spent tool money on. Good quality and work well.

I do just enough AC repair work to invest a little money in my tools, but not enough to spend big bucks. I'm a pretty serious DIYer and have a decent set of Yellowjacket gauges, but they came without low-loss fittings on the hoses. The last time I had to do any AC work on an R410a system, disconnecting the high-side line led to a BUNCH of high-pressure refrigerant getting all over my fingers. No, it's not the end of the world, but my fingertips were a little frostbitten for a couple of days. Since I don't do this for a living, I investigated low-cost fittings that would reduce refrigerant loss. These had good reviews and seemed to be what I needed so I bought them. They simply screw onto the ends of your existing refrigerant hoses (unless you have an R134a hose set, which uses different connectors in most applications). You connect the hoses and refrigerant tank normally, but you have the option of shutting off the valves on the fitting before you disconnect. This allows the refrigerant to stay trapped inside the hose set instead of puking out all over your fingers. Then you can close off the high side and then bleed (almost) all the trapped refrigerant back to the low side through the manifold, venting almost nothing but a tiny bit of vapor. They work well. I recently serviced an R410a system that needed a top-up (yeah, I know, you're not supposed to top up R410a because it's a non-azeotrope, but in reality for most small top-ups you won't get much in the way of fractional distillation so you can get away with it). I shut the valve off, disconnected the high-side, and had only a tiny burp of refrigerant come out. Never even felt it on my fingertips, and I was able to vent what was trapped in my hose set back into the low-side line. So why only 4 stars? Well, the fittings screw on fine, but unless you REALLY crank them down, they'll move around on the end of your hoses. It doesn't cause a leak (at least not in mine) but it's a little disconcerting because you're not really sure if they're completely tight or not. I use Nylog blue (highly recommended) on each of my hose connections as insurance, but I still don't like how loosey-goosey the connections are. Since I use my gauge set infrequently, I suspect it will never be a problem for me. However, if you're a pro (or even a fairly serious amateur), I recommend saving up and buying true low-loss fittings from a reputable company like Yellowjacket. A set of the Yellowjacket low-loss hose extensions with ball-valves will cost 4X as much as this set, but I suspect the quality will be worth it. Better yet, but a hose set with low-loss fittings already installed.
