Q: is it waterproof if so how deep can you go underwater

Not waterproof. Maybe water resistant to a point but it's not sealed at the speaker, so under a faucet may cause problems, and the led and power button would leak with any real depth. I've seen videos where guys have sealed the speaker with silicone.

Q: Does it come with batteries,if not, what type?

mine did come with batteries but I have owned it awhile and that may have changed. it is stored for the winter, cant remember if it was 9 volt or double AA.

A single 9 volt battery. Not rechargeable in unit.

Q: How far away can the detector be from the ground to pick up a signal.if it is only 9 inches long do i need to stoop o er to use it

This is a pin pointer so what it does is help pin point small items so if the object is not on top of the ground you will need to dig a little and it also depends on how big the object is i have expensive pin points and this one work great i will be buy another one love it
