The trimmer has slowed way down. replacing batteries didn't help. any suggestions? does it need new blades? has it run it's lifecycle?

Life up the blade and clean out any pieces of hair around the blades and motor. This should be done periodically. I would also recommend applying some blade lubricant periodically to help keep everything moving smoothly.

How is it using it without the guard?

It's a trim razor without the guard, it works well. With the guard you can trim a beard pretty good as well.

If you pull off the adjustable trimmer comb to reveal the blades, you'll find "Made in Japan" in real small print just below the blades.
