So far so good... Issue with sleep and OSX Driver. November 2019
I just received my MF644 and here's a couple thoughts from the first couple hours. I'm a typical user not a paid reviewer, although a bit more sophisticated because I'm an IT professional, so read the whole review.Print Quality - only have it one day, but the print quality is amazing, out of the box I put a magazine in the scanner, hit copy and I couldn't distinguish the copy from the color magazine cover.Easiest printer setup I've ever seen - All cartridges are pre-installed, kudos to Canon. just take the tape off and config your networkNetwork setup dead simple in seconds - I used the WPS Router Pin code method, if your router doesn't do this, get a new router. You end up entering a pin number into the printer that your router issues and the setup is completed, no passwords, etc.Printer and box is really heavy - I actually lugged this up two flights of stairs, the box is as heavy as the printer. On the plus size, this is not a flimsy printer, feels extremely solid.Everything you do on this printer is through a touchscreen and web page you access using the IP address of the printer. The response is a bit sluggish, Canon could put a better processor in it, but it's useable.AirPrint - I have an Iphone, iPad and Macbook Pro, no problem Airprint and Macos printer setup work perfectly, no extra software necessaryScan to Email - this is a big one for me, I setup scan to Gmail and configured two preset buttons for this on the printer menu. The setup instructions are not intuitive, you must do it through the remote web interface (browse to the ip address) and also you must go to the network port menu and change the smtp port to 587 for gmail, but it works perfectly.Paper Handling - Tray is small 100-150 sheets, ok for home use. Scanner ADP feeder works flawlesslyPrice - At $209 delivered with a 3 year warranty, this is a STEAL, this is a $400 printerIssues:The printer insists on going into sleep mode and loses network, cannot be seen be AirPrint or Mac OSX until powered off.I’ve resigned myself that this is just not an always on printer, if you can live with just turning it on when you need to use it then it’s fine, sleep mode cannot be set to longer than 4 hours and I don’t see any recovery than turning the printer of and on to reconnect to the network. FOR THIS I GIVE IT 4 stars instead of 5Canon Mac driver does not permit printing color document in Black and White, Apple native drivers do I setup Google print, and I didn't have it configured correctly, what happens is that periodically the printer displays a error message and the network goes offline. Anyway, I don't really use 'Google Print' so I just disabled it through remote web. I'm sure if you take the time to set it up perfectly, it would be fine.Overall Impressions - Fantastic printer/scanner at an unbelievable price $209, if it continues to work this well with generic cartridges (sorry Canon your toners are just way to expensive) then I will be extremely happy with the printer. Hard to imagine ever going back to a color inkjet printer.

OVERKILL FOR HOME USERS, BUT IT IS THE ONE YOU WANT! Updated after 8 months of ownership
Review of Canon color Imageclass MF644Cdw printer.I am a retired IT professional working with computers over 40 years experience. After careful consideration this was the printer I chose. There is not much not to like about this printer. Software is basic but functional. There is far more functionality than my retired status will ever use however for a low load office, this printer is ideal, with the ability of using certificates and encryption for remote printing and faxing. One should download the full user manual. The PDF manual is almost 700 pages long and addresses the extended functionalities for IT professionals. These days I do not need and will most likely not use any of the remote capabilities, but it appears very capable. I had no issue finding the correct manual from the manufacturer from the install cd. The quick start guide included in packaging will be sufficient for most home and small office users.Unpacking. I highly recommend when unpacking to leave the printer on the floor. If you do, as I did, place it on a table to unpack, you will move the printer back to the floor 3X. The unpacking diagram clearly shows leaving it on the floor, and the diagram is correct. The packaging itself is a work of nice engineering, with limited waste but high shipping protection, and first out of included components. Lots of bright orange shipping tape to remove, ensure you open doors of printer to get it all. Hint; all the pull ends of the tape are folded over. Knowing this helps you determine the best way to pull the tape and the order of pulling it off. Not much direction in removing it, but observation of tape ends helps in unpacking.Note: this printer does not come with USB printer cable, either style of full sized usb cable will work, either the rounded serial or standard . I had several on hand.It does come with power and phone cable, a plastic piece that is used as a paper dust cover used only when printer is loaded with legal sized paper,(piece not normally installed for standard paper) and a quick start guide. The manuals do not address the plastic piece and I did scratch my head.Toner: Toner cartridges come preinstalled. I have yet to change toner in spite of my printing however it looks straight forward. A strong feature of this printer is the number of after market toners available for this printer. I was able to buy a full set of aftermarket high yield cartridges rated highly for this printer from Amazon for less than the cost of ink jet cartridges I had previously been using. Cost of ownership was the number one reason I bought this printer.Printing has been flawless with a single exception. I copied a photo, then printed out the result in several sizes. I was disappointed that photos were too red. I do not believe this was a printer flaw as air dropped photos printed on regular paper (not photo paper) printed with no observable color distortion. (I have since determined adjusting for color in my graphics software corrected the color distortion issue, as I thought, an adjustment was all that was required) I performed a water test on the printed page with a splatter of water droplets. There was no distortion or “ink run” of the toner. It performed better that just a water drop on plain paper would have no bleed or run.Copying no issue, fast enough from printer wakeup for my needs. I have used both the sheet feeder as well as the platen glass. The duplex capability works fine with no opposite side paper bleed-through. The multi sheet feeder works well. Note : ensure no staples of paperclips are attached to documents. Multi sheet feeders in general don’t like them. I did not test recoverabilityI of that mistake.. in what I tested, no paper jams occurred.Air dropped photos from iPad worked easily. Setting up the printer on a wireless network was simple, just used the sync menu item and the router sync to connect. I did not use the Android method but suspect it works as well. It requires an android software package installed to operate on an android device. it required little setup, just select print, then select device. If you live in an apartment or where other wireless networks exist, you may choose to register the devices with the printer to restrict printing. I live isolated from other networks, so for me I wanted to leave the printer open so my visitors could print easily if needed.Fax I did not use Fax capability, but setup appears fairly straight forward and allows department header tags, important for small business.Email: Nice email capability. Note: it can send images via PDF or as individual pictures depending on settings and can be changed. Follow directions in the user manual PDF to use this functionality, can be set for multiple users, though I never tested this capability.OCR (Optical Character Recognition). For test of accuracy I scanned a standard Times Roman text and reviewed the output in notepad. The result was 100% accuracy. Because I used notepad formatting was lost, not unexpected. I have done a lot of scanning over the years this appears to be about as good as it gets. I did not test multi fonts or fonts on color as my experience says error probably can be induced. But for reading a plain text document, the tool is excellent.Be sure to download the manual linked on included CD. 700 pages in the full manual, as there are very sophisticated remote print capabilities that can be used as securely as you choose to set it up to include certificate and NIC registration capability. Software installed easily. The software is minimalist in nature, but very functional. On Windows 10. I did not test Linux or IOS other than the airdrop print capability on the pad.In summary, after using this printer for about a month, to the home user I say this is the printer you want, it costs a bit more, but the cost of ownership should be a fraction of ink cost over the life of the printer.. With a number of choices for toner from second source manufactures, make this choice a no brainer. To the IT professional, this is a good choice for small low print yield application. It could work for office up to 10 fairly readily provided the office print requirement relatively Modest. Print from sleep has been reliable, I have not seen issues other reviewers have reported. It has sophisticated over the net capability, as well as firewall port switching capability. Full manual is comprehensive enough to set it up for an IT PRO. Being retired, I not only did not need capability, but turned it off. This is a sound choice. Not a paid review.Addendum:8 months after purchase and use i can say this is the best home printer I have owned. I still rate this printer at 5 stars. I have become very familiar with various features. It has performed flawlessly. I have paid for this printer just in cost of ownership. I never realized just how much I needed the duplexing feature and it works well with this printer. It performs well with common various paper weghts. No doubt I would choose it again. It simply works. One caveat, while default photos work, I found tuning colors for the printer, improves picture quality. If you are using photo paper, you will want to adjust the color somewhat to match original. Once you have made the color tweak adjustment, it shuld work for photos well. Default works but tweaked the colors are very good.

Superb Enterprise-Grade Printer at a Great Price but Don't Buy Your Toner from Canon
I agree with all of the positive reviews about this printer's print quality, speed, and features. I want to focus my review solely on my experience with Canon's automatic replenishment service. After a very bad experience, based on poor value and poor customer service, I cancelled my enrollment in the service and resolved to buy my supplies only through Amazon. For that reason, I am giving an overall rating of 4 stars, a rating of 5 stars for print quality, 5 stars for sleep mode, and 1 star for tech support (although the support I received was more for resupply/logistics, as opposed to tech support).Canon makes great products but provided bad service. I was initially enthusiastic about the idea that I could order toner replenishment automatically; however, the enrollment process was confusing. Also, when the printer initially reported a low cyan toner level, it was unclear, whether an order was initiated. I waited for a long time on telephone hold before abandoning the process. It was only too easy to purchase compatible toner cartridges from Amazon and have them on my doorstep overnight. A week later the printer reported low black toner level but did not tell me, if an order was initiated; however, I saw the email notification of shipment. When I finally received shipment, I was disappointed to receive a single black toner cartridge for over $100, when Amazon.com provided all four colors of Toner Kingdom's product for under $80. When i called the number on the packing slip to initiate a return, the voice menu told me to choose Option 2 for existing orders, which sent me to a recorded message to go to the web. I had to call back and select Option 1 for new orders to talk to a person, who gave me the required RMA and informed me that I had to ship the toner cartridge at my own cost.Your options to resupply this printer from Amazon.com are:1) oner Kingdom Compatible Toner Cartridge Replacement for Canon 054 CRG-054 for Canon Color ImageClass MF644Cdw MF642Cdw MF640C LBP622Cdw - 4Pack for $76.96https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RQLJ94C2) Canon® 054 Black Toner Cartridge, 3024C001 for $62.99 (Same as what Canon sells for nearly $100 plus shipping)https://www.amazon.com/Canon-Toner-Cartridge-054-imageCLASS/dp/B07QDVH2RX

Canon 644cdw laser printer
Have always liked Canon quality and this is a fairly compact printer. The negatives are it is difficult to get all functions to pair with the PC. Print is fine, but other functionality is a pain.If you are running Windows 11 Pro, you will have to get the software/firmware updates.

Pleasantly Surprised
For the last month I've been researching and debating which AIO color laser printer to get after being completely fed up with inkjets and all of the cartridge issues that come along with them, especially Epson. There are a lot of mixed reviews out there for this MF644Cdw, but I took a chance on it based on even worse reviews for other comparable brands, like HP and Brother. I'm glad I did. I feel compelled to write a review based on my surprisingly good experience so far.First is the initial setup. A lot of reviewers reported a horrible setup experience. This was not the case for me. Unbox it, untape it, turn it on, connect to your wifi using the LCD panel, and load the drivers on your PC (download the latest from Canon's website). That's it. I have only tested on Windows at home so can't speak for MAC drivers. I also haven't experienced any issues with the touch panel functionality. Some people say they have to push unreasonably hard on the LCD screen to get actions to register. This is not my experience and mine accepts inputs just fine like any other office printer I've ever used.Prints came out perfect right out of the box starting with the first test page, although I did go through the full gradation calibration anyway just to be thorough. Seeing how I don't plan on using this for full photo prints I left most of the print settings at their defaults, but you can bump up the quality higher than the default dpi if you desire. Copies were accurate and scans were more than sufficient.I was most concerned with the scan quality based on some online reviews, but I found that the scans on the glass plate turn out to be more than acceptable even at the standard 300dpi. You can easily modify this to go up to 600dpi which produced great results. I'll note that I have not yet attempted to scan using the ADF function. There are additional scan quality settings in the settings menu as well as copy settings, so experiment with them to see which suits your needs. For copy, I set mine to the "Text/Photo/Map (Quality)" setting which proved to be sufficient, but there is a "Printed Image" option which provides even more detail. There are a ton of settings on this thing, and I'm still testing all of them out one function at a time. The MF Scan utility allows for customizing scan quality settings, file types, destinations, etc., but it does lack any truly helpful post-processing or cropping. Some users have reported that the NAPS2 utility addresses these post-processing shortcomings if that is an issue for you. I have not yet tested it but plan on doing so soon. The only hiccup I've encountered so far was when I tried to use the MF Scan Utility to pull a scan from the printer to a PC. The utility wouldn't connect to the printer no matter what, even though the printer was online and I could print to it just fine. No number of uninstalls/reinstalls of the scan driver or utility made a difference. Rebooting the printer did not help either. Surprisingly, I found that a simple reboot of the affected PC fixed it (an increasingly rare occurrence these days) and now everything is working. Finally, scan to email works great and is not too bad to set up at all using the Remote UI.You definitely want to set up the Remote UI pin during initial setup in order to fine tune this thing. It will help immensely when customizing and enabling features. Also, download and read the manual! I was able to configure everything over the course of about two hours including getting the Android Canon print app to print from my phones.I've been using this thing for only one day so far but have really put it through it's paces. Sleep mode works well with adjustable timers. Wake from sleep works perfectly for me (using DHCP reservation for the printer wifi address). Wifi signal is good and stable at about 40 ft away from router through multiple walls and obstructions. Double sided print works great. The only features I haven't tested yet are ADF scans, fax, and print from USB drive. The bottom line is that I was a bit skeptical when pulling the trigger on this one after reading hundreds of reviews from multiple sites. I ended up narrowing it down to either this or the Brother 3770. The brother has much better scanner specs and reviews, whereas a lot of reviews of the Canon mention functionality issues or disappointing scanner quality. On the other hand, the Canon seemed to win when it came to color accuracy and overall print quality. Reviewers also had some pretty bad things to say about the Brother toners and drum. It turns out my primary concern with the Canon MF644 scanner was unfounded and it performs better than expected. If you are looking to archive old photos for enlargement and print then you are better off getting a dedicated standalone scanner anyway. But for everyday documents or photos that you don't plan on enlarging this performs very well.I'll try to update this review as time goes by if I end up running into any issues or if there are any surprises when it comes to toner usage and replacement. Until then, I have to give this 5 stars based so far and will be recommending to friends and family.
