Review: Sweet spot - Does its job. I picked this one because if you unleash the steel, its hole is big enough for the rod to fit through. For precise placement of sparks, it sometimes works better to hold steel still (right over where the spark needs to go) and pull ferrocerium toward you. I thought that might work better with more surface: a round rod inside a round opening with a sharp edge. However, it's not much more contact, not much more precision, and requires better coordination because both angles have to be just right. Using a straight edge the normal way is easier and works at least as well, no untying needed. So, what's special? Just the right size: both pieces are large enough to hold onto and throw fat sparks, small enough to tuck into my Pocket Rocket case. It's easy to find huge, heavy rods, and spindly, short rods for sale. Those have their place, but for constant carry Goldilocks says this set is just right.

**Q: Has anyone had issues getting this to spark?  I have generic rods that throw lots of sparks but I am struggling with this one.**
A: I thought the same thing, once I rubbed off the black on the rod...No problem.  I will say that using the side of the piece of metal attached worked best for creating lots of sparks.

**Q: Will this work with an schf2**
A: It will work with anything that has hardness above 7 and a sharp enough edge to scrape material off. I've used them to throw sparks with everything from the included scraper to the spine off a knife to a piece of sharp rock. I've even seen someone gets sparks off one using a piece of broken glass.

**Q: Is this made in china? usa??**
A: ALL ferro rods are made in China. Some are marketed by American companies. There are no production facilities for ferrocerium in the US

**Q: I purchased the schrade scaxe2 and lost the ferro rod that came the handle. could this be used as a replacement? will it fit the handle?**

Good ferro rod - likely hard ferrocerium (sparks a bit less than soft, but lasts longer as a result and is much cheaper for some reason) . Includes a better striker than most rods come with. I like to keep a 3/8" rod with each of my knives and use the knife as a striker - typically the back of the blade. But this was the perfect size to keep with the pictured BK2. Those familiar with Becker knifes know that the thick stucco they coat the blades with doesn't allow a spark off the spine. However, the BK2 and some other Becker models have a small half-round curvature next to the blade's edge which IS sharp enough to spark. This rod fits that slot perfectly and sparks well from it. That's what I was hoping for when I bought it. Alas, I still ended up stripping the blade of the BK2 so that it would cut wood finer, better. For Becker owners who don't want to go through that hassle, this is the fire steel for you. The built-in grip also makes it a little safer when striking so close to the knife's edge. And being that it fits the slot so well, you're getting more surface contact for more sparks than what you could get off the straight back edge of the blade. If the knife was made by Schrade, or the fire steel made by Becker, you'd think they intended each as a compliment to the other.
