Is there a coating on the exterior of this pan or with age, does it get that gray residue that rubs off on your dish towels when drying?

I have two full sets of all clad since I cook a lot. One set I have had for over 20 and never found that has happened.

This is definitely a hefty pan. I am not familiar with the "stainless d3" mentioned in the question, but this pan should satisfy anyone as far as weight is concerned. If it was any heavier, considering its size, the pan would be difficult to move around in the kitchen. I have used it several times and am very happy with it.
