Hit&Run (PASS Series Book 1)

Action-packed!
Hit & Run is a spectacular romantic suspense by Freya Barker. Ms. Barker has provided readers with a well-written book populated with a stellar cast of characters. The characters and dialog in this book make it a fun read. Rosie is caring for her mother and working nights at a hotel. While taking the trash out she witnesses one of the people staying at the hotel crash into something and then almost running her over. Jake works for PASS, a security firm, and keeping the star of a film being made is a major headache for him. Rosie and Jake's story is packed with drama, humor, sizzlin' sexy bits, action and suspense. I enjoyed this book from cover to cover and look forward to reading more from Freya Barker in the future. Hit & Run is book 1 of the PASS Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

A Few Anomalies, But a Good Read
Freya Barker is a newly discovered author for me. I previously read a book in her Northern Lights series as well as High Stakes from another series. I didn't realize she had a few series out, so I am playing catch up.Regarding this book, I have the book and the audiobook. I listened to the book and thought the narrators did a great job.I liked Jake and Rosie. I appreciated that Rosie was 42, and I think Jake was 39. I am happy to see that life does not just exist in the 20-30 yo range but characters with more life experience are just as interesting. Rosie having to be responsible for her mom added another dimension to both her character and the book. Part of the highlight of the book was her best friend Grant. I loved the way he supported Rosie, and the closeness they had. There was really good chemistry between Jake and Rosie. A relationship that neither one had anticipated turned into much more than either one had been searching for at that point in their lives. Jake was more than a bit surly and at the beginning, I wonder if his intentions were going to be more about his job, or Rosie and what was right. This book also had a strong element of danger, mystery, and suspense. I can't remember exactly when I started to suspect the actual person, but I do know I was definitely well into the book. At that time, it was only a hint of a suspicion. I love a good romantic suspense where I have to work for the mystery. There were some anomalies, but I found they didn't detract too much. At one point, it was supposed to be really cold and Rosie didn't come close to being dressed for the weather. PASS was supposed to be this high tech group, but somehow they let couldn't keep track of their charge. It did make me wonder.Jake and Rosie work out their differences as Jake tries to keep Rosie alive while figuring out who wants her gone. Their relationship develops and blossoms as it ultimately leads to their HEA. I also like both of Jake's "brothers". I am going for 4.5 stars.I would definitely recommend you check out Freya Barker's work. 3 books in 3 different series, and I have enjoyed each one.

Dang, but I loves me some Freya Barker!!
This story is terrific. What always gets me about FBs books is the writing. She never writes her plot into a corner, she never gets out of a tight spot by rewriting a character, and she never writes dialogue that isn't realistic. These are, to me, writer sins of the highest magnitude, and I see them on many other books. Every one of her stories is full of realistic, imperfect characters, who speak and behave in easily believable ways. I also love that her characters are typically more mature, since believe it or not, love and sex and conflict continue to happen way, way past youth. In this story, you have the H, Jake, a security guy doing babysitting duties for a hot film star who has misplaced most of his humanity with cash and privilege. And you have Rosie, a hotel cleaning lady with a sick parent and a big bag of loneliness trailing behind. Already, I'm engaged in this story. There's a mystery of sorts, and the h suffers some scary accidents. The H protects her as he loses his heart in the process. The plot, stuffed with secrets, blackmail, and liars, is good with 1 or 2 exceptions. And seriously, very few writers in romance can do a sex scene like FB. Holy guacamole, smoke will leak from your ears, ladies. This is a terrific story. Looking forward to the next one, which I preordered happily. If you haven't read any of her other series, get on that immediately. They are such better than alot of what's out today.

Yes, buy it.
For me there is nothing sexier than a mature couple finding their one. Life experience, often world weary men and woman that are past games and the shallow outer layer and ready for honest and real commitment. Jake and Rosie definitely fit that perfectly.

Your new favourite read
New book from your favourite author - check, first book in a new series - check, forty something heroine - check. All these big fat ticks are next to Hit & Run, the latest book from Freya Barker. When A Hollywood film crew arrive in town and base themselves at the local hotel, Rosie a hard working member of the night team, soon catches the eye of Jake ,one of the security team, who are brought in to protect the cast and crew.As ever the story develops at a pace, that enables you to fall for the characters both main & side and leaves you wanting the next book & eager to see whose turn is next.

Mature Romantic Suspense
I like Freya Barker’s work because she tends to focus on slightly more mature protagonists, in this case 38 and 42. Both have lived fairly solitary lives up until meeting. In the case of Jake, his parents died when he was young and after meeting his best friends in foster care, went into the military. When he came out he joined up with his best friends and started working for PASS (Protection and Security Services). He is a loner, who has never been interested in romance or relationships. He didn’t avoid them, they just never even entered his head.On the other hand, Rosie had wanted a chance for a family and relationships but got sucked into a long term relationship with a married man and believed all his lies. Her Dad, who she had a great relationship with, died when she was 20 and her mother criticised her endlessly.Eventually returning to Grand Rapids to look after her mother who had rapidly worsening dementia, Rosie found herself working in housekeeping on a night shift in order to look after her mother during the day and have someone sleep over at night for less money than a nurse would charge for watching her mother when she was awake. She was exhausted, harried, miserable and alone, apart from her friend Grant, a gloriously camp black man, who was also kind of isolated.Jake ended up meeting Rosie when he was based at the hotel she worked in, whilst they worked security for a film that was shooting nearby. They both had run ins with the star of the film and they were not happy occasions. Rosie witnessed the star doing something they shouldn’t and Jake ended up having to find out whether she would keep her mouth shut. This book was interesting because it not only dealt with a romance between two older and more experienced people, but it also dealt with the moral ambiguity involved with working with the rich and the powerful and how the downfall of one important part of the puzzle would mean hundreds, if not thousands of people being affected financially. Having the backdrop of their newly flourishing relationship being lies and coverups, doesn’t make for an easy start.I liked this book because the heroes weren’t ‘good’ people. They were ordinary people forced to see things in gray rather than black and white. They were interesting, flawed and normal. Adding on to the interesting characters was a diverting plot, to keep you guessing until the end.All round, this was an entertaining book, and I’ll definitely read the next in the series.

Rosie and Jake!
Rosie works nights as a Housekeeper at a hotel and witnesses a hit and run. Jake a bodyguard is looking after a star in town working when he sees Rosie. This is a dramatic and way intense book. THe passion and connection between Jake and Rosie is obvious. Understandable that Jake isn't happy babysitting the star but the bright side is he sees Rosie and an attraction is there from the start even if it is one sided at the start. This book really was great and I really enjoyed the rush when reading it. Great story!!

Excellent start to a new series!
As always with a Freya Barker book, I know I'm going to be in for a treat...and Hit & Run certainly is a treat! It's well written and has great characters. Rosie and Grant's interactions were absolutely brilliant. He's the best friend we'd all love to have and they make the most of working together at the hotel this story takes place in.One night Rosie witnesses a crime, and Jake, security for an actor staying at the hotel, crosses paths with the gorgeous Rosie...and with no leads to the criminal, Jake realises Rosie knows more than she's letting on...Excellent start to a new series!
