è un libro adatto a chi è interessato alla sociologia e non disdegna la filosofia da cui parte l'autore per la sua analisi. L'edizione è veramente gradevole, caratteri non troppo piccoli. Il nazismo, una delle tante forme di collettivismo autoritario, ha stimolato nel professor Popper, ebreo austriaco emigrato in Nuova Zelanda (come dire sulla luna negli anni '30 del '900), una riflessione profondissima e magistrale sulle forme di società e sulle loro caratteristiche. Più che un testo di sociologia, direi di antropologia.

What does the USA need to restore in order to maintain its democracy in the 21st century? Surely, the discussion in this book must be carried on by our current generation of leaders and citizens. Of course, nobody can be blamed for not finishing a book this big. Still, each chapter is worth reading on its own. And the Marxist academic types who have so much to contribute, are only going to grow wiser by reading Popper's critique of Leninism's cultural failures. And if you really want to bother the MAGA crowd, buy this book just because of George Soros' introduction. Democracy is assisted by occasionally reading from this book.

Extremely dry and almost impossible to read for an average person. Maybe interesting for academics but definitely not for a general reader.

This is a well made paperback. Poppers' classic contains a strong critique of Plato in general and The Republic in particular. It was controversial in its time, 90 years ago, but his judgements have gradually drifted into the mainstream. The Anthropology (Chpt. 10) is utter rubbish; consisting of little more than Just So stories but this is to be expected from that time period. Flannery and Marcus on The Creation of Inequality [2012] or even, perhaps, Graeber would be good correctives. A very fine (a bit dated) book which will change the way you see the 5C BC in Greece and Plato.
