The study of human conduct
Symbolic Interactionism is sociologist Dr. Herbert Blumer's title for the way students of human conduct should approach its study. Blumer was a student of George Herbert Mead, one of the great pragmatist philosophers who along with William James and several others were fathers of mdern social psychology.Mead focused on how social consciousness arose among people, the crucial ability to view one's self the way others view us, and the way people's perceptions come about and contribute to their conduct. It is a dynamic view of society as a constant process of interaction, rather than a static image of society as made up of structures that predetermine conduct. It important in every day life. Since a person forms his conduct based on his understanding of the situation he confronts, if you want to understand him, you have to learn to see the world as he sees it.In a world in which people are far to ready to project their own prejudices onto others, taking the time to actually find out what other people think or see, would go a long way toward bringing peace to our time.

A Classic
This collection of lectures - sometimes quite long-winded - are a classic for understanding the basics of Symbolic Interactionism. A serious student (or researcher) starts with the original texts.

Informative
Meaningful communication occurs in context. In fact the context frames the message. Blumer describes how factors such as relationships and interpretation construct meaning. Relationships have histories. Meanings change as relationships mature. If one is to understand interpretation, one must be familiar with these realities. What is "real" is what is real in the mind of the receiver. Individual interpretation is the essence of communication. Blumer makes a lot of sense in describing how people attribute meaning to symbols and objects based on what is real to them. Groups are another element in the overall process of creating meaning. This book helps you to gain a better understanding of how individuals create meaning in their lives.
