Will this stain skin if it comes into contact with it?

It will temporarily. It is very potent and concentrated. The glass jar I mix it with hot water in has a tinge of pink to it even after washing.

Is this food grade? Can it be used to color cake batter?

Hi Karen, thanks for your question! Our Cochineal Extract is intended for dyeing textiles, we don't recommend using it in food. However, any red food color that contains "carmine," "red #4," or "e120" will contain natural cochineal extract. There's a brand on Amazon called "Trucolor Carmine Red" that's meant for baking, and there might be some other brands with natural cochineal as well. Hope that helps!

results on mordanted rayon ?

Hi, thanks for your question! We don't recommend using Cochineal Extract on rayon, as the results will probably be very pale. Cochineal Extract performs best on animal fibers like wool and silk. Since rayon is made of cellulose (plant fibers like wood) it probably won't absorb the color very well. Please let us know if you have any other questions!
