The hot water cartridge turns counterclockwise to open, and the cold water cartridge turns clockwise to open. I ordered and replaced both the cold and hot water cartridges for my 15-year-old Newport Brass 3-piece faucet. The new cartridges were an exact replacement and installed easily. I was going to replace only the leaking hot water cartridge, but after changing it out I noticed that the new hot water cartridge was buttery smooth compared the older cold water cartridge. As such I also replaced the cold water cartridge and the whole thing operates like new again. Word of advice, use anti-seize lubricant on the top threads where the bell housing screws down. Years down the road you'll be glad you did.
