36-Page booklet In 1958 Max Roach one of the most outstanding and innovative drummers of his time, and a significant figure in the history of jazz decided to create a new quintet with young jazz musicians. The front line featured two outstanding new players from Memphis, Tennessee: 23-year-old tenor sax George Coleman (who joined Miles Davis group in 1963) and 19-year-old trumpet player Booker Little (who, unfortunately, would die in 1961 of uremia). Ray Draper, an 18-year-old tuba player from New York, also joined the quintet soon after its inception; and Art Davis, double-bassist, 24, from Harrisburg (Pennsylvania) were the last components of what became one of the most powerful hard-bop quintets in history, the Max Roach Plus Four. The group is basically the same in all the sessions, except for the use of piano (by Eddie Baker or Tommy Flanagan) in two dates, and trombone (by Julian Priester) in another. This 3-CD set gathers all the American recordings the group made between June 1958 and January 1959, and showcases one of the most overlooked periods in Roach s remarkable jazz career. As bonus tracks we have included three alternate takes recorded exclusively for the mono version of the first LP, and the only performance made by the group on one well-nown TV show. This edition was originally released in 7 LPs "Max on the Chicago Scene," "Max Roach + 4 At Newport," "Deeds, Not Words," "Award-nning Drummer," "The Many Sides of Max," "Sessions, Live," and "The Defiant Ones" (United Artists) an album recorded under the leadership of Booker Little.

Excellent Sets
I have always liked Max Roach in the plus four settings. Previously he's recorded with Sonny Rollins, Clifford Brown, Kenny Dorham and Hank Mobley in similar formats. I had several of these sessions on vinyl and have been looking to acquire them on cd for some time. So, I was more than delighted to see this three cd set come on the market. Six previous albums and the music from one live tv performance make up the content. The time frame represented is from June 1958 thru January 1959. Musicians are: Booker Little trumpet, George Coleman tenor sax,Ray Draper tuba, Art Davis bass, Julian Priester trombone(one session) Eddie Baker piano(one session)Tommy Flanagan piano(one session)Bob Cranshaw bass(one session). Tubaist Ray Draper gets a fair amount of solo space. He participated in four of the sessions. Previously he had recorded with Jackie McLean and John Coltrane and subsequently with Sonny Criss, Jack McDuff and Sun Ra. There's also an excellent booklet that contains the original album notes as well as other material. The front line of Little and Coleman is superb. Roach was at the top of his game. Top notch!

Four hours of inventive hard bop from Max Roach's Quintet 1958-59.
The great drummer Max Roach(1924-2007) recorded several excellent albums during 1958-59 featuring piano-less quintets with young sidemen such as Booker Little(trumpet); George Coleman(tenor sax); Ray Draper(tuba) & Art Davis(bass). Many of these original albums are currently hard to find but they've been collected together on this superb 3-CD box set. The period covered is from June 3, 1958 to January 22, 1959 and albums included are 'Max on the Chicago Scene', 'Max Roach + 4 at Newport', 'Deeds Not Words', 'Booker Little 4 & Max Roach', 'Award Winning Drummer' & 'The Many Sides of Max'.With almost four hours of inventive hard bop and a comprehensive booklet these complete Max Roach "Plus Four" sessions deserve a place in any modern jazz collection.

Jazz
