I am mostly interested in a small, lightweight keyboard I can play on my lap. Could this work for that?

It is a nice, lightweight keyboard. But it is prob still too long to play on your lap. It would probably tip from side to side as you moved laterally on the keys. Plus your wrists will be screaming at that angle.

Does this keyboard have the option to save my favourite tones so that I can easily retrieve it when playing?

The Yamaha MOXF8 does, it has a favorites list that is user programmable.

Does it have speakers?

No. This model does not have speakers. You must connect it to external speakers.

Can headphones be used so that others do not hear?

On the MX61 model, there is a headphone input. You will need to get a 1/4" Stereo jack adapter if you only have normal stereo headphones. You can get one on Amazon or Best Buy.
