Nikon D40 (Magic Lantern Guides) Review: Basic guide - I purchased this guide to accompany the camera I was gifting to my daughter. I appreciated the format, covering all of the camera functions, menus and features without becoming too detailed or technical. It was about the right length so that she didn't just toss it aside but actually reviewed it cover to cover. The guide arrived in perfect condition, wrapped in plastic within 7 days, as promised. Nikon D40
The book is difficult for me to understand, however, I believe this is due to my total lack of knowledge of photography terms. The Nikon D40 is a difficult camera for the novice to understand unless using the point and shoot options. I have been reading and rereading the book, and the knowledge is gradually coming through. The book is much better than a DVD I purchased on the same subject.

Pass on this one
We bought this book for our daughter when she was studying photography and it proved less than useful. I don't know if it was a complete waste, but it certainly was not helpful, and is not one of the books she determined to take with her when she moved into adult life. Pass it up.

Great field guide!
This guide fills out the missing pieces the D40 instruction manual left out. I gave it a quick skim through to get an over view of the advanced functionality of my camera. Now I take it with me when I'm shooting... to look up tricks and tips to get the right shot in the field. Highly recommended!

Very in depth
This book is very in depth, but it fully explains things that the user manual leaves out. Additionally, it gives hints from the author about settings and strategies. This book is not a "sit down and read" book, but is more of a reference. I recommend this book if it is for your first Nikon camera body, otherwise you may not find much use of it if you are already familiar with Nikon digital bodies.

I've had my camera for many years and only recently purchased this book. Its very informative and has a great glossary at the back of the Book. the wallet card is very handy too.

I partly share both previous reviewers' view points; at first I found it to be very texty and not as immediately informative as another guide I bought. Having explored the limitations of this 2nd guide, however, I went back to this one and found it immensely informative and was able to pick up many tips. It's worth sticking with this one, because you can refer to details and refresh on them. The book is well organised with v few errors/typos.
