Works well to limit buildup on EVAP cooler pads
These are not super inexpensive, but they do work. I use them in a couple Hessaire evaporative coolers I keep outside for when the weather gets into the 90's or 100's. I live in a city where the water is pretty crummy and quite hard. I noticed a good amount of buildup on the pads when I got the evaporative coolers, but after I started using these within the coolers, the pads have shown minimal buildup. When the weather gets into the 100's, I have home automation which controls a smart outlet that is linked into my Ecobee thermostat for my HVAC system. If it's 88 degrees or higher, I have one of these coolers pointed at the outside condenser, and it runs while the AC is cooling the house. This reduces the head pressure, amp draw of the compressor, and improves the interior cooling performance. I typically only use this setup if it's going to be 100+ for multiple days, but it can certainly put some hours on the EVAP cooler. Again, little to no buildup in almost two summers seasons. I will keep buying these as necessary. I think I've gone through about four packs in two or three years.

Hard Water Treatment Stick for Swamp Coolers
This product works great! I've had my swamp cooler for a about three month now and every month it has been a huge chore to clean the scale build up in the cooler due to our very hard water here in Phoenix AZ. I purchase this product about a month ago and this last time I had to clean my cooler the process went so much faster. There was a lot less buildup - a notable difference. I will continue to use these water treatment stick next summer.

So far so good, but sudsy bubbles
UPDATE: I think the suds are normal! They still emerge slightly upon a fresh fill, but they don't blow bubbles throughout the room anymore. Maybe a reaction to the build-up already present the first go-around? In any event, we've noticed that since we put this in a month ago, our Hessaire evaporative cooler unit is performing excellently, not getting less strong over time as seemed to happen without something like this Portacool treatment stuff. Like another reviewer, after dropping this in my tank on a fresh fill, I proceeded to get suds built up. They started coming out as bubbles from the vent but it didn't escalate to chaos: the bubbles stayed small and it didn't become a boilover situation. The sud buildup on top of the water line was about half an inch at the peak; by end of use tonight, suds were about a quarter inch. I will keep an eye on this and modify my review appropriately to see if this becomes a repeat problem. It's only been one day of use, and it's not clear proof, but after using this, we achieved 1°F more cooling than we usually get. I think the scale buildup visible on the inside of the fill meter has cleared up too.

Easier to use and keep up with. They don't desolve but seem to last well.
They are a solid bar inside a cloth sleve and they colo the water slightly. They don't desolve so you aren't sure when they are used up. I gage by the color getting much lighter. They eliminate the constant adding & measuring of liquids. So much easier! Seem to work ok but not a cure-all. There is still some buildup but it did help. Yes, much more sane & easier than liquid with less storage space. Yes, I'll get more for next years swamp cooler.

Worth it
These do a great job at keeping the hard water/calcium build up to a minimum. I use these in a Hessair 3100 swamp cooler with a 11 gallon tank. I use 2 at a time and they seem to last me about 3 months They seem a little pricey but if you don't use them the inside gets a lot of build up very quick. Phoenix is known (unfortunately) for their horrible water, these help.

Great product
We have very hard water. I tried several different strategies to maintain my swamp cooler. These, by far, have been the most effective. I only wish there was some indication when they are spent and ready to be replaced.

Not sure
Don’t really think they work as good as the company claims

A Must Have To Treat Hard Water in Evap Coolers!
I recently purchased new evaporative cooling pads for my older Portcool evap cooler and decided to purchase these to treat our hard water. I have used these since the beginning of summer and I still have not noticed any mineral build up on the new pads!
