First of all, people, if you want your dog to respond to a whistle you must TRAIN your dog to respond to a whistle! Dogs do not automatically know what you want the whistle to mean. Wow! Some people!Anyway, I've been using two whistles for my dogs that I carry on a lanyard around my neck. I use the small metal "silent" whistle that's been around for decades for getting their attention (1 toot) or calling them to me (2 toots) when they are fairly close to me--say 50 yards. Then I use either a "police" whistle, such as an Acme Thunderer or Fox 40, for when they are farther away. But my police whistles are so darn loud that I'm reluctant to use them when there are people around. Cue the Acme Sonec. Really lightweight, easy to blow both soft and loud tones, and when I blow it hard I don't feel like I'm waking up the entire neighborhood. I find it's effective up to about 150 yards. Farther than that and I have to use the police whistle.One caveat--to use this whistle effectively (or ANY whistle) you do have to know how to blow a whistle. Laugh if you want, but there is technique involved. As a retired soccer referee I probably own 15 different kinds of whistles and I know how to blow each one in different ways to get different results. My suggestion to new whistleblowers is to first search the web for "how to blow a whistle", watch some vids, then go someplace where you won't bother other people and practice. It's not hard to learn, but I see people all the time at the dog park who don't do it right.

Thank God this worked on my neighbor's golden retriever. I was worried because these whistles only work for about 65% of people's dogs it seemed from reviews and I'd have to try different whistles with different frequencies. But this one worked right away! The first two times working with the neighbor's dog I had to blow it about five times every time he barked, but then he stopped all together. This last time he started baking, I blew it and so he went inside his house to bark - which is better than right over my fence!

I have a cavalier that likes to sit on the top of our hill and bark at what ever she sees. After straining my voice to call her repeatedly, I realize I needed another method to break her barking trance. I bought this as a way to shock her out of barking and come inside immediately and it worked from the first try, rewarded her and since had great success. We walk her off lead in the woods often and tried it there with success unless she smells or hears a squirrel or chipmunk or deer or something, she is very prey driven. The whistle is minimally successful against prey drive for us but we also did not do much training in that regard either.

Nice for the money. The not-so-nice part about any dog whistle, of course, is that you can't just blow it and expect your dog to come (wouldn't that be nice). You have to train your dog to respond to it, and that part's not so easy if you're someone like me who's lazy about training your dog. But I do have to say that the last dog I had responded to the whistle even without any training. The sound always caught his ear. He recognized the sound as 'different' and would stop in his tracks and look at me. I could then say 'come.' Sometimes he'd come and sometimes he wouldn't, but the sound always got his attention.

These whistles are fantastic. Whistling to your dog is far more effective than calling them especially when you are frustrated with them. Plus the whistle can be heard from much further away than your voice. You can do some very easy conditioning with your dog by whistling 3 times before every meal and also by playing hide and seek with your dog (calling them to you with this whistle) and rewarding them with treats and praise. By the time you really need them to have reliable recall they will be much more likely to come when you whistle.

My pup is not quite old enough to start formal training with this whistle yet. And, as others have noted, it is very light weight and cheap feeling--which I wouldn't have a problem if it works as intended. But it surely doesn't seem very loud. When running out in a field, I'll be surprised if my pup can hear it from more than 100 feet.

I used this whistle as an alternative to yelling at my 4 month old Irish Setter puppy. I live on a couple acres along a pretty busy road so the noise around me required me to yell repeatedly for my pup to come. The very first time I used it it got my pups attention and then I called him. I gave him a couple treats for coming so promptly. This seemed to work every time with him and within a few days he would come immediately with just the whistle. The whistle carries nicely over my yard and has been such a success I purchased additional for other members of my family. He will come every time with the whistle, while he will sometimes ignore the come command.

No returns possible, not what I expect from Amazon. The item is listed as a dog whistle but it's so loud and shrill for humans and the dogs don't respond.

Our new Labradoodle puppy was happily running around in the park when someone blew one of these whistles and she immediately stopped and looked. I talked to the whistleblower and he said he'd always trained his dogs using one. A bit of internet research later and we are well on our way to having a puppy who returns on command. Makes me feel like a pro when dog walking with a super obedient dog.
