Word Roots Beginning: Learning The Building Blocks of Better Spelling and Vocabulary

This book is fantastic. It actually provides the definitions of the root words, prefixes, and suffixes; so they’re not just adding/subtracting parts of a word, students are learning the definitions of every new word they create. I am also teaching them syllable breakdown with the words. I’ve started both my 9 and 10 yr old on this book as part of their language arts curriculum, and will continue using the series.

This book is just what I was looking for! It breaks down words into roots, prefixes and suffixes, so kids can start to understand how they combine to create different meanings. The lessons are laid out really well and I find them easy to teach and my kids to follow along. My 8 year old find it the most interesting and is able to do it mostly on her own. I help my 6 year old by reading it to him but he is able to do the exercises and do some of the reading on his own once the words are broken down and repeated through the exercises.

We are using Word Roots (Beginning) for Homeschooling and my daughter is loving it. I start off helping her with the first example and then she will say, “Mom don’t help me. “I want to do this by myself.” For someone who dislikes reading and would cry to pick up a book, sure loves this book! I’m glad she’s enjoying this book. She’s doing one lesson per day. We also bought Level 1 as well and can’t to start on it as soon as she’s finished with the Beginning Level!

I was pleased to add this into our language arts program mid way through this school year. The activities are simple enough for the kids to do with little assistance. If you don't want to do a formal latin or greek program, this is a nice short cut to some of the benefits.

Latin is the root for so many romance language words! It is so useful for my kiddo and will aid her linguistic studies.

Learning word roots really does help for comprehension. It really helps to break the word down and get the definition of it without a dictionary. You can discover and understand what a new word means if you can identify the root. I bought this book for my kids and after working with them in this book, they were able to give me the meanings of if words they never knew before.

Great workbook, lots of exercises.

My 11 year old daughter is using this as a part of her homeschool curriculum this year. It is a little too easy for her age, but we wanted to start at the beginning. We’re excited to work through more of the books. I think this level would be perfect for 3rd-4th grade.
