What a movie!!

A good movie definitely worth watching has a good story line, good music, another good movie is suburbia

This movie rocks! Such a great throwback.

One of my all-time favorites, but I find this movie is usually very personal. That is, some people respond to it very strongly where others just don't as much. The ending always leaves me with a bittersweet feeling of "I've been there". You know the main character will be alright, but something else was lost. it's one of those times you know you'll look back on fondly, but you knew it had to come to an end. If you want the less sappy explanation -- it's a disillusionment archetype with an archplot structure. A character has certain ideals and those ideals change through his experience. We are carried through the story from his perspective and see why this happened. At the end, we are led to believe he is completely and irreversibly changed. This movie isn't actually about punk. Punk is the vehicle they use to carry the plot. If someone were so inclined, they could change it to any "extreme" subculture and still have it be meaningful. It could be about people who are huge fans of black metal and still have the same basic story beats. There's a saying where movies are made for the last 20 minutes, and I would say that is true about this one too. It has a really good ending that I like a lot. The beginning is plenty entertaining, but at times, can seem a little aimless or pointless. It is mostly just establishing atmosphere and backstory. All in all, I would give this film an A-, really enjoyable.

SLC Punk! (James Merendino, 1999) Matthew Lillard, in the main, makes mediocre movies. So when I stumble upon something like The Curve or SLC Punk!, I find myself pleasantly surprised. The boy IS capable of acting, he just doesn't seem to do it all that often. SLC Punk! is the deceptively simple tale of two punks, Stevo (Lillard) and Bob (indie film favorite Michael Goorjian) trying to survive in the counterculture of perhaps the country's most boring metropolis, Salt Lake City, Utah. Professing a belief in anarchy and a general confusion about such heavy topics as drugs, the opposite sex, and what punk really is, the two, coupled with various fringe players, spend long hours cooking up ways to take down the system without ever actually doing so. That is, when they're not partying. While Lillard and Goorjian are the centerpieces, some of the fringe roles are just as well-acted and engrossing. Star Trek cutie Jennifer Lien plays Stevo's on-again off-again soulmate, while Bob falls in love with X-Files' Annabeth Gish. Christoper McDonald, forever branded with the stigma of having played Tappy Tibbons in Requiem for a Dream, does a minor but wonderful turn as Stevo's dad. James Duval, Summer Phoenix, Devon Sawa, and a host of others all also pop up in minor roles. Like its main characters, the movie seems to have no direction at first, but ends up being more than just your typical slice-of-life flick. There is meat to these bones, and it's quite fine. Recommended for more than just the novelty of seeing Matthew Lillard actually act, for once. *** ½

Old Skool Classic

SLC Punk is a great movie, under appreciated as it is. The visuals are good on the DVD and the audio is very good - three soundtracks are available here: the original soundtrack in 5.1 surround; an isolated score track in 5.1 surround and a commentary with the director and the two lead actors in stereo. Overall a good buy. Recommended.

DVD is new, and region free which is the biggest plus. Has commentary and special features to boot

Über den Film muss man eigentlich nicht mehr viel sagen, einfach kultig und witzig, aber doch auch mit ernsthaften Momenten bzw. einer ernsthaften Thematik. Schade ist natürlich, dass anscheinend keine deutsche DVD erhältlich ist. Eigentlich ist das nicht so tragisch, da ich Filme sowieso lieber im englischen Original gucke. SLC Punk ist allerdings keiner von den Filmen, bei denen man die deutsche Fassung nicht mehr aushält wenn man das Original kennt. Von daher ist die deutsche Synchro kein Muss, wäre aber doch schön gewesen. Schwerer wiegt, dass man sich erst durch das Internet wühlen muss um herauszufinden, wie man an seinem BluRay- oder DVD-Player den Regionalcode deaktiviert. Hat man auch das geschafft, steht dem Filmgenuss nichts mehr im Wege. Winziger Kritikpunkt: Die Extras sind ein wenig dünn, ein "wirkliches" Extra sind für mich nur die Audiokommentare, die aber eigentlich mittlerweile zum guten Ton gehören. Für alle die den Soundtrack haben wollen ist es interessant, dass die DVD einen "Isolated Music Track" hat, dass man also die Dialoge ausschalten und nur die Musik hören kann. Ich hätte mich aber mehr über herausgeschnittene Sznenen, Interviews etc. gefreut. Aber das ist Geschmackssache. Insgesamt überwiegt die Freude, endlich diesen Film zu besitzen.

Es ist verwunderlich, dass dieser Film so wenig Beachtung erhalten hat. Sogar auf Rotten Tomatoes, der Meta-Datenbank für Filmkritiken hat der Film eine Bewertung von 69 % (bzw. 89 % Audience rating) erhalten, was für einen - vermutlich eher schmal budgetierten Film aus den 90ern - schon ziemlich beachtlich ist. Der Plot behandelt die Collegezeit zweier junger, männlicher Punks in der Mormonenstadt Salt Lake City. Die vierte Wand wird immer wieder durchbrochen, wenn in Rückblenden das soziale Umfeld der beiden Protagonisten beleuchtet wird. Dabei zeichnet sich der Film durch schräge, aber glaubhafte Charaktäre und bizzare und durchdachte (und dabei unglaublich lustige) Wortspiele aus. Meine Mitschauer*innen kritisieren regelmäßig, dass der Film bei einer sehr markanten Stelle mit langer Kamerafahrt über die Ufer des Salzsees enden könne. Vermutlich lässt mich lediglich meine nostalgische Brille jede Sekunde dieses Films genießen (und mitsprechen). Bitte beachtet, dass auf der englischsprachigen DVD der Ländercode verhindert, dass beispielsweise meine Playstation3 den Film abspielen möchte. Ich habe die DVD als Ergänzung zur deutschsprachigen VHS-Kasette gekauft, die ich seit fast 10 Jahren besitze. Durch das Wegfallen der Synchronsprecher*innen und der Übersetzung entwickelt der Film nochmal eine ganz andere Ästhetik. Interessant ist zudem, dass auf Kasette und DVD zwei unterschiedlich geschnittene Versionen gebannt wurden und dass man das nicht nur an Schnitten, sondern auch an der Musik (die teils unterschiedlich ist o.0) merkt. Ansonsten stellt SLC Punk einen der gelungeneren Gastauftritte von Till Schweiger in einem englischsprachigen Film dar. Das reiht sich ganz gut in die Zeit ein, in der Schweiger noch in Punkfilmen versiffte Lederjackenträger spielte, anstelle mit seichten deutschen 'Unterhaltung für die ganze Familie'-Hirnlosfilmen sein Geld zu verdienen. "Das ist kein normales Wasserbett. Ein normales Wasserbett geht so... [Wellenbewegung mit der Hand] ... ganz viele Wellen. Das hier macht aber keine Wellen." - "Bob, warum hast Du Dir nicht einfach eine normale Matratze gekauft?" - "Das hier macht keine Wellen." Fazit: Ich kann diesen Film jeder/m empfehlen, dier nicht exklusiv auf plattgebügelstes Popcornkino steht, es liebt, wenn alte Punkklassiker als Soundtrack im Hintergrund laufen und dier diesen ganz speziellen Humor hat, der aus Verzweiflung und Wahnsinn erwächst (und dann mehr schlecht als Recht als Misanthropie getarnt wird). (Zumal dieses Jahr scheinbar die Fortsetzung erscheint? Ich bin gespannt...) "Tiere. Ich habe Tiere immer gemocht."
